Are you looking to spend your summer outdoors in parks and on trails? Come join the City of Issaquah as our Seasonal Park Ranger!
This position provides assistance to park users, provides education around park rules and regulations and protection of the natural environment, and ensures that park facilities, equipment, and vehicles are secure. This position involves continuous public contact and serves as a main point of contact to members of the public regarding park rules and regulations, questions, problems, concerns, and may assist with reporting or responding to emergencies.
This position will ideally start in early April and last until early October. This is a 40 hour per week position. We are looking for someone to work Sunday - Thursday from 7am - 3:30pm with some evenings and schedule adjustments as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The incumbent works in close coordination with the Human Services Division, including the Human Services Behavioral Health Coordinator, and the Issaquah Police Department to report or resolve concerns. The work involves unaccompanied foot, bicycle, and/or vehicle patrol of parks. This is an unarmed, non-law enforcement position that performs regular Parks maintenance duties similar to those performed by Parks Operations Worker I.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

  • Direct supervision is provided by the Urban Forest Supervisor.
  • Provides guidance and training in areas of expertise for the Park Operations Worker positions and seasonal employees.

  • Patrols City parks, trails, and open spaces to identify safety, compliance, and maintenance issues.
  • Assists in providing routine parks maintenance during patrols and in coordination with parks operations crews.
  • Communicates with park patrons; provides education regarding park use, resolves user conflicts, answers questions, provides directions.
  • Removes obstructions, unsanctioned encampments, litter, and environmental hazards from park areas.
  • Performs picnic shelter turnover, restroom custodial services, preps and maintains ballfields.
  • Contacts unsheltered individuals in parks and open spaces; works closely with Human Services team to provide resources and assistance.
  • Issues notices to individuals in violation of park rules.
  • Prepares and delivers educational / interpretive programming to community groups.
  • Supports volunteer events with Green Issaquah program.
  • Other duties as assigned; may require evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and/or shift work.
  • This position requires wearing a uniform; must maintain issued uniform and equipment.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of at least two years of college in natural resource management or related field preferred.
  • Experience in natural resource management.
  • Experience performing park and trail maintenance work.
  • Experience working with homeless population, individuals experiencing addiction, and/or individuals with mental health concerns.
  • Familiarity leading environmental education and interpretive programs.
  • Experience leading volunteers.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and make sound decisions independently.
  • Washington State driver's license required. Must have a driving record free of serious or frequent violations. Qualified applicants will be required to provide a driving abstract prior to hire.
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job. Applicants selected for the position will be asked to complete a pre-employment physical prior to hire.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Current certifications in CPR, AED, and First Aid or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of local laws relating to park use.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and impartiality when enforcing park rules.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction.
  • Ability to maintain accurate, thorough, and organized records.
  • Ability to communicate professionally with park users, community members, City staff, and others.
  • Ability to remain calm under stress or while interacting with confrontational persons.
  • Ability to secure park user cooperation through education, communication, and de-escalation.
  • Physical strength and ability sufficient to meet job requirements for extended period under uncomfortable conditions in all types of weather. May involve lifting up to 80 lbs. and hard manual labor.
