Description / Position Overview
SEASONAL - Park Guide - North Cheyenne Canon (PT Park Guide)
Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services seeks a Park Interpreter and Safety Patrol for Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center and Helen Hunt Falls Visitor Center. In this position, you will provide information and outdoor education programming focused on the natural and cultural history of North Cheyenne Canon and the Pikes Peak Region.
You will work in a mountain setting only minutes from downtown Colorado Springs, near waterfalls, massive rock formations, and peaceful creeks. Learning from experienced staff at the Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center and Helen Hunt Falls Visitor Center, you will develop best practices and skills needed to work in the great outdoors!
This is a seasonal (at-will) position with benefits limited to those required by applicable state and federal laws, which include Worker's Compensation, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, and PERA (Public Employees' Retirement Association).
Approximate dates of employment are from May 20 through September 2 with the possibility of an employment extension. Hours worked will vary and be between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily, including required weekend and holiday hours. Total hours worked not to exceed 1,500 annually.

Essential Functions - the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
  • Interact with visitors from around the world
  • Work with team members to operate and maintain Helen Hunt Falls and/or Starsmore Visitor Center
  • Provide information, wayfinding, and maps for North Cheyenne Canon Park and surrounding attractions
  • Perform trail patrols and guided hikes for visitors at Helen Hunt Falls
  • Provide interpretive talks and interactive programs
  • Inform visitors of park rules and safety regulations
  • Respond to incidents involving injuries; communicate with emergency staff
  • Oversee adult and teen volunteers
  • Keep statistical records
  • Monitor and count daily donations
  • Open and close the visitor center; clean restrooms, and perform site maintenance and perform site maintenance
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
  • A desire to learn and curiosity about nature, including wildlife, geology, trees, wildflowers, and ecosystems
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Knowledge of the local environment and the natural and cultural history of the Pikes Peak Region
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely

Successful candidates will have
  • A high school diploma or GED supplemented by one year of college-level coursework in education, outdoor recreation, natural sciences, or experience in a related field
  • Possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver's license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges

Ideal candidates will also have
  • Experience working or volunteering in a park or visitor center setting
  • Experience creating and delivering interpretive programs

Additional Information
Work is performed in a mountain environment with elevations up to 7,225 feet and possible exposure to extreme weather conditions. This position requires the ability to hike up to four miles, stand, climb, stoop, bend, and lift up to 60 pounds occasionally.The City of Colorado Springs offers additional compensation depending on the position, area of assignment, and specific job assignments, including shift differential, pay differential, acting or lead, special assignment, hazard pay, longevity, cell phone allowance, uniform allowance, relocation, awards, standby, call out, compensatory time off, tuition, overtime, extra duty, incentive, holiday premium, proficiency, and vacation sell back.
