CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
The Highway Engineering Intern assists the Engineering Department with construction staking, construction observation, records management, Geographical Information System (GIS) data and base mapping, project development, and other Engineering Department functions. This position is intended for a current college student majoring in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or another related field.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
The following are illustrative and are not intended to be all inclusive or restrictive.
- Assisting with preliminary surveys, construction staking and inspection of project
- Performing manual labor duties for road construction to conform with established engineering standards set by supervisors and the highway department.
- Assist with on-site construction inspection.
- Performs other related duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Any combination of training and experience providing the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices and instruments used in surveying and drafting.
- Knowledge of metrics, algebra and geometry.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to work in weather extremes such as heat, humidity, cold, wet and dust.
- Ability to work on rough, wet, slippery and steep terrain.
- Ability to work around heavy construction equipment and highway traffic.
- Required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, lift, grasp, feel, talk, see and repeat motions.
- Required to occasionally lift fifty pounds or more from the ground to waist level. Frequently lift fifty pounds or less.
- Ability to inspect construction and maintenance projects.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other engineering personnel, contractors and the general public.
- Regular and timely work attendance.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License.
- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age on the date of employment.
- Student at an accredited university or technical school majoring in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology.
