The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state. 
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Seasonal Farm Manager for the Rutgers Gardens within the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. The Farm Field Manager will train and lead activities of student workers, interns, and volunteers; develop and implement tasks to effectively maintain the growing space and surrounding areas to maximize productivity and quality of crops.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
  • Conducts field operations related to the sustainable production of diverse vegetable, herb, and other crops.
  • Trains and leads activities of student workers, interns, and volunteers.
  • Develops and implements task lists to maximize productivity and quality of crops (including seeding, watering, greenhouse management, transplanting, fertilizing, pruning, pest and disease control, trellising, harvesting, and processing).
  • Develops and implements task lists to effectively maintain the growing space and surrounding areas (including weeding, mowing, trimming, vine removal, composting, mulching, and plant removal).
  • Coordinates and distributes produce from the farm to end users (including CSA members, farmers market customers, and local food pantries).
  • Maintains records for the farm (including seeding, planting, inputs, and harvesting).
  • Researches as required to troubleshoot a problem or to implement a new practice or system.
  • Compiles seed and supply orders.
  • Assists in other Student Farm projects as necessary.
Position Status Full Time Hours Per Week 40 Daily Work Shift Rotating Work Arrangement
This position requires a fully on-site work arrangement.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • High school/vocational school education or equivalent experience.

Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid driver's license and two years driving experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with organic, no-till production systems is strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of experience working on a small-scale diversified vegetable farm.
  • Experience working in a university setting is also preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


Equipment Utilized
  • Mowers, String trimmers, Wood chipper, Tractor, Dump truck, Farm and Harvest equipment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Will be required to work some evenings and weekends according to scheduled programs offered at, and public access to, Rutgers Gardens.
