Job Description
Job Summary:
A Seasonal Engine Captain (Engine Boss) at Chloeta will participate in wildfire prevention and mitigation work for structure protection. This role will be focused mainly on property insurance protection and not on suppression activities. When not on assignment, Engine Captains usually lead their crews in physical training, basic engine maintenance, wildfire staging, homeowner assessments, data collection and prescribed burn assignments.
Your estimated start date is March 2024; however that date could be earlier or later based on completion of all requirements and staffing needs.

Compensation:

  • Non-exempt
  • $26 per hour
  • Chloeta reserves the right to offer any candidate above or below the listed compensation amount based on experience or business needs.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Lead their crew in the safe and effective completion of assigned work-on and off mitigation projects.
  • Assist with developing and implementing training programs (mandatory, formal, and informal) in compliance with policy and regulations.
  • Manage property, procurement, maintenance, and inventory of equipment and assigned engine.
  • Provide technical and administrative supervision to an engine.
  • Develops performance standards. Gives advice, counsel, or instruction for firefighters.
  • Track and approve timekeeping and travel record-keeping.
  • Oversee the maintenance of assigned engine, tools, and equipment keeping such apparatus, tools, and equipment in good operating and safe condition by competently and efficiently performing maintenance and testing tasks.
  • Oversee routine non-firefighting work tasks willingly and adequately such as working on Company records, timecards, and other related paperwork.

Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Must have current and valid State issued Driver License (DL) with acceptable driving record
  • Must be proficient in utilizing technology such as computers and tablets/iPads
  • Represent Chloeta professionally at times
  • Operate effectively in team settings in high stress environments
  • Maintain a prominent level of physical fitness
  • Maintain a constant readiness for response nationwide
  • Continue both personal development as well as continuing education when time allows
  • A current DOT Medical Examiner's Certification is preferred, but not required (will be obtained for qualified individuals upon employment)

Education and Experience:
  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Required: NWCG Single Resource Boss (SRB) certification to at least the ENGB, CRWB or HEQB Level or NFPA 1021 Fire Officer 1 qualification (Chloeta will facilitate crosswalk and Gap courses for NFPA candidates)
  • License verification, education, and certifications must be provided at the time of application and can be emailed to certification@chloeta.com.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to pass a WCT (Work Capacity Test a.k.a "Pack Test") at Arduous Level (Complete a 3 mile walk wearing a 45 pound pack in less than 45 minutes)
  • Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at times.
  • This job operates in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, tablets etc.

Pre-employment Requirements:
Due to the nature of Chloeta's services, this position is contingent upon completing with a satisfactory outcome some or all of the following pre-employment background screenings: government security clearance, federal and state criminal background checks, drug test (urinalysis), Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) review, educational history, employment history, and/or credit check. In accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), pre-employment background screenings will require the employee's written authorization and will occur after acceptance of an offer of employment and prior to commencing work. Additionally, employees are required to complete the federal I-9/E-Verify process.
Emergency Response:
Every Chloeta employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official Duty Station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official Position Description (PD). Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.
