BASIC FUNCTION
To maintain an atmosphere of peacefulness and respect in cemeteries, municipalities employ cemetery operations personnel to manage these final resting places. These professionals oversee the day-to-day maintenance of cemeteries under their care and take care of the cemetery facilities.
- Prepares graves and maintains cemetery grounds: Locates grave site according to section, lot, and plot numbers, and marks area to be excavated.
- Removes sod from gravesite, using shovel.
- Digs grave to specified depth, using pick and shovel or backhoe.
- Places concrete slabs on bottom and around grave to line it.
- Mixes and pours concrete to construct foundation for grave marker, using premixed concrete, wheelbarrow, and hand tools.
- Positions casket-lowering device on grave, covers dirt pile and sod with artificial grass carpet, erects canopy, and arranges folding chairs to prepare site for burial service.
- Builds wooden forms for concrete slabs, using hammer, saw, and nails.
- Sets grave marker in concrete on gravesite, using shovel and trowel.
- Mows grass, using hand or power mower.
- Prunes shrubs, trims trees, and plants flowers and shrubs on grave, using hand tools.
- Removes leaves and other debris from graves, using leaf blowers and weed eaters.
- May drive vehicles, such as backhoe, trucks, and tractors.
- May repair and maintain tools and equipment, using hand tools and power tools and applying mechanical knowledge.
- May open and close mausoleum vaults, using hand tools.
- Follows directions per project specifications.
- Possesses and retains proper license to operate vehicle.
- Remains available for all emergency situations.
- Checks equipment before use.
- Determines when equipment needs to be used.
- Operates equipment according to safety guidelines.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND CONDITIONS
- This position requires working in both an internal and external environment.
- Significant amount of time will be spent working outdoors and in inclimate weather (within reason and safety) to include: hot, humid, cold, rain, ice and snow.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in written form.
- A pleasant, friendly, and outgoing demeanor.
- Willingness to take on additional tasks as assigned.
- Familiar with basic OSHA stands and safety practices.
- Must have an unexpired Motor Vehicle's License and a good driving record.
- Experience in grounds keeping preferred.
