Job description

The Fish, Ecotoxicology, and Water Section (FEWS) of the Pesticide Environmental Toxicology Branch evaluates the potential health risks from chemical contamination in sport fish and issues health advisories and consumption guidelines. Additionally, FEWS evaluates the potential public health risk associated with consuming seafood following oil spills or when fish and shellfish contain high levels of other toxic substances, such as domoic acid, and makes recommendations to the Department of Fish and Wildlife regarding the closing and re-opening of affected fisheries. The Section also provides guidance and support to other boards and departments of CalEPA and state government, local health authorities, and the public on matters related to the health effects of contaminants found in fish and shellfish. The Staff Toxicologist (Specialist) acts as a statewide subject matter expert on the toxicological properties of petroleum-related chemicals that bioaccumulate in fish and shellfish and performs Seafood Safety risk assessments following oil spills.

Working Conditions
OEHHA has a hybrid work environment that includes work in an office setting in a downtown high-rise building and telework at home. The air-conditioned accommodations consist mainly of open areas furnished with cubicles. Not all areas have direct natural illumination. Time-critical assignments are part of the workload. This position requires extended periods of reading and writing, frequently using computer workstations, statistical and analytical computer packages, communication resources, and word processing software. This position also requires the incumbent to work on occasional weekends and holidays and travel statewide and occasionally out of state.

This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
• Excellent writing and verbal communication skills
• Experience evaluating the risk of chemical contaminants in fish
• Experience in exposure modeling of environmental contaminants
• Knowledge of risk/benefit analysis in exposure assessment
• Ability to exercise good judgment when interacting with the public and professional staff
• Ability to use modeling (e.g., Benchmark Dose, PBPK) and other quantitative or dosimetry methods or statistical methods for data analyses and high-to-low dose extrapolation
• Ability to develop and manage contracts
• Contribute to the continuing effectiveness and improvement of the Environmental Management System
• Ability and willingness to handle complex technical issues, multiple activities/projects, and urgent deadlines
• Ability to use word and data processing computer programs to support and accomplish technical work
• Ability to work within the limits of the program's/office's/state's policies/procedures/resources to implement toxicological and environmental health practices and procedures
• Ability to maintain professional performance by adhering to timely completion and quality of deliverables, maintaining communication with team members, and providing progress reports to the Section Chief
• Ability to work independently and know when an issue needs to be raised to a higher level
