Bennett Aerospace, Inc. has an opening for a highly motivated Scientist I located at the Kennedy Space Center.
This full-time position will support analytic or scientific studies in space horticulture and microbiology. Evaluation of experimental results; applies scientific principles in horticulture and microbiological research for technology development. Member of an experiment or project team. Support various projects: growing and evaluating crop plants for space food production for life support systems in future spacecraft for space exploration missions. Supporting microbiological analysis of crops and other samples. Apply scientific principles in research and technology development. Generally, function in one or more of the following activities: literature review, experiment design and biological analysis.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Work effectively and cooperatively in a team environment.
• Work multiple projects without missing deadlines or sacrificing accuracy.
• Be self-motivated, demonstrate initiative, and be able to work independently or with minimal supervision.
• Provide support to our Plant Processing Area (PPA) and our Microbiology lab as assigned.

Education and Experience Required:

• Bachelor’s degree in relevant field of science with 0 years of experience or equivalent experience.
• Excellent communication, presentation and customer interface skills required
• Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team environment.
• Must be self-motivated, demonstrate initiative, and be able to work independently or with minimal supervision.
• Competent in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook) and SharePoint.
• Execution of experiments in controlled environment agriculture. Includes utilization, cleaning, and monitoring of environmental chamber
• Post-harvest physiology evaluation, harvest techniques and data collection of scientific plant material
• Hands on experience with various equipment: quantum sensors, spectroradiometer, leaf porometers, photosynthetic gas exchange systems, leaf area meters, pH/EC meters
• Performs visual crop assessments and records findings
• Hands on experience with basic microbiological procedures such as colony enumeration, isolation, identification of bacteria and fungi
• Ability to carry out specific SOPs related to horticultural and microbiological experiments
• Daily maintenance of plant and microbiological experiments
• Procurement, safety documentation, biohazardous waste disposal, managing inventory and lab maintenance
• Must have accountability, proactive behavior and strong attention to detail
• Ability to work independently and in a highly collaborative team environment

Experience with the following is a plus, but not required:

• Support of biological experiments for spaceflight missions
• Hyperspectral imaging, data collection and analysis
• Experience with statistical analysis and presentation of data
• Survival of bacteria under disinfection and biocidal conditions
• Plant propagation, clonal propagation, tissue culture, grafting
