Job description

As one of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)’s top contractors, ISS is seeking a Scientific Programmerto support National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) office.


Where you will be: This role is fully remote; however, it would be advantageous for occasion meetings and onboarding if local to Asheville, NC, Silver Spring, MD, Stennis, MS, or Boulder, CO.


What you will do:

  • Program and write code for a variety of purposes to further NOAA’s mission.
  • Converts scientific, engineering, and other technical problem formulations to formats that can be processed by computer.
  • Resolves symbolic formulations, prepares flowcharts and block diagrams, and encodes resultant equations for processing.
  • Has extensive knowledge of software engineering principles and coding and understands capabilities and limitations of computer.
  • Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.
  • Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
  • Supports the Software Engineering Branch (SWEB), which is responsible for developing and sustaining the enterprise services for ingest and metadata management to support the science, stewardship and service mission areas. The SWEB provides expert support for all aspects of the software development lifecycle, including requirements definition, design, development, testing, release management, deployment, and configuration management.

What you bring:

  • BA/BS (or equivalent) in Computer Science or Information Technology
  • 0 to 2 years of experience in a related area
  • Experiencing writing code in a linux system
  • Experience with Javascript (ideally React) and Python
  • Experience with API development (RestFul services), GitLab w/CI/CD & runners, container experience (OKD or Kubernetes) a plus
  • Experience with AWS, Lambda, and Cloud9 a plus
  • A self-starter, team oriented attitude
  • A strong interest and background in promoting ocean and coastal stewardship
  • Bonus points: You are familiar with NOAA and/or NOS.
