Our company is looking for a Science & Military Writer, Public Information to join our team in Monterey, CA.  This position will be supporting a government customer, hence only US Citizens may apply. If you have relevant experience and enjoy being in beautiful Monterey, CA, then please apply!

The successful Science & Military Writer, Public Information should have knowledge of journalism practices, communications strategies and vehicles, including print, digital and video, public affairs principles; experience in writing about graduate subjects related to engineering, math, business, public policy, security, operational and information sciences; mastery of the Associated Press (AP) style; the ability to apply standard practices, methods and techniques to write, edit and prepare final copy for news and feature stories used in publications and on web sites, in marketing materials and/or for use in public relations activities; familiarity with newspaper publishing processes and the design and production of print and electronic products; expertise in word processing, graphics and publishing software; and demonstrated experience with computer technology and digital photography.

Relevant skills include consistency, accuracy; engaging inquiries and successful interviewing; thorough supplemental or background research; development of personal profiles and announcements; stating clearly the objectives and achievements/awards of research; ability to translate complex research-based information into laypersons’ language; familiarity with Department of Navy (DON) terminology a plus; awareness of client mission and goals, particularly as an extension of the Department of Defense (DOD) and DON; personal initiative; and the capacity to take direction, work individually and/or with a team.

Standards require that works be written at a level appropriate to a graduate-level educational and research university.

The Science & Military Writer, Public Information will perform the following tasks which include but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining and advancing professional standards
  • Adhering to public relations, journalism and communications practices, particularly those that require awareness of and sensitivity to the unique position of the university
  • Establishing a roster of contacts among campus leaders, faculty, staff, tenant commanders, reporters, publishers, officials from local and national organizations and government agencies, educational institutions, and civic groups
  • Drafting news content for a wide variety for official communications vehicles, including print, digital, and video
  • Writing short news stories, feature articles, photo captions, social media and web content, press releases, and news scripts as assigned, per guidelines provided by supervisor
  • Developing planning and delivery of final product, including research, scheduling and conducting of interviews, resolving challenges, reporting progress to supervisor, and producing results on time and in accordance with instructions, requirements and accepted communications practices
  • Synthesizing, integrating and simplifying information compiled from several military, scientific, academic and industry sources
  • Managing several projects concurrently
  • Participating in a sharing system to facilitate the process and workflow between team members and with supervisor
  • Ensuring finished work is technically sound and reflects professional academic standards
  • Assisting with or directing photography in a variety of settings
  • Assessing outcomes and guidelines and adopting and/or recommending changes to supervisor
  • Adapting to fluctuating conditions, from potentially prolonged sedentary activities as in writing to potentially hazardous photographic settings
  • Recommending communication strategies as improvements
  • Completing and complying with all training requirements, instructions and regulations
  • Remaining responsive and flexible with management structure and potentially shifting situations

Requirements and preferred experience: 

  • Required Education: BA/BS degree in communications, journalism, English, or other relevant discipline
  • Required Experience: 3+ years' experience with writing, proofreading, editing, publication, review, and quality assurance
  • Desired Qualifications: Proficient in Microsoft Office suite products (particularly MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint). Experience in technical and/or science writing. Demonstrated ability to work independently researching, writing, and editing material such as white papers, fact sheets, multimedia materials, web features, press releases, and newsletter articles
