General Position Description

The School-age/ Summer Camp Teacher works under the direction of the Site-Administrator along with the Executive Director of St. Peter's Child Care.  The School-age Teacher should have a working knowledge of the basics of child growth and development for the age group for which he/she has responsibility. This knowledge must be demonstrated through his/her work with the children as well as in planning and organizational skills. One of the main responsibilities of the School-Age Teacher is implementing the daily activities, engaging with the children while supervising the group, and following the State of Ohio Licensing Standards and Step-Up to Quality Standards.

This Position Reports to the Schoolage Administrator

Key Responsibilities

°          Arrives to work on time and reports to designated classroom ready for their shift.

°          Always supervises and ensures the safety and well-being of the children being alert for the needs of the children as individuals and as a group. This includes having sole custody and care of a group of children.

°          Presents themselves as a positive role model for the children throughout the day.

°          Responsible for keeping the classroom, materials, storage rooms, and bathroom, neat, clean, and in proper working order.  All harmful materials and equipment must be kept out of the reach of children. During the school year, all materials need to be taken out and put away each night, which requires lifting storage bins, pulling shelves, and carrying rolled carpets to designated areas.

°          Responsible for keeping all storage areas clean and organized.

°          Implement weekly lesson plans based on the interests of the children while using the Common Core Standards as a guide. 

°          Assists in preparation of snack for the children.  Ensuring that there is adequate amount of food for the group and that the basic food requirements are met. During summer, the teacher is responsible for preparing each meal and snack that is provided. Accurately documents the meals served to each child at the Point of Service on the correct CACFP form. Washing any dishes, and returning plastic containers, bowls, and utensils to the Infant Room cupboard.

°          Responsible for cleaning the tables and sweeping after each meal, and activity done on and around the tables. Floors are to be also swept each night before leaving.

°          Ensure that all opening and closing procedures are followed daily.

°          Maintain frequent communication with children, staff and families and report to families on the daily events that took place.

°          Must be always aware of ratios in program and maintain assigned schedule to meet ratios of the school-age program.

°          Must handle discipline in accordance with the Center’s policies.

°          Responsible for attending all required trainings (First Aid, Communicable Disease Prevention, Child Abuse Recognition, & CPR training) including an additional ten hours of school-age training per year in accordance with Step-Up to Quality Guidelines. These are required and the teacher will be terminated if they do not complete the required hours per year.

°          Attends regular staff meetings, center functions, etc. as directed by the Administration Team.

°          Maintains open communication with the Administrative Team regarding the needs of the school age program, children, and parents, including illness, behavior, and other circumstances that might affect the Center.

°          By law, Teachers are required to report any suspicions of child abuse or neglect.

°          All other duties as assigned.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

·         Minimum of 3 years of experience within a Licensed Child Care Center.

·         High energy.

·         Strong oral and written communications skills; technology skills.

·         Ability to work well with others (staff, children, and parents) and to foster a team environment.

·         A strong understanding of child development.

·         Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

·         Responsible for attending all required trainings (First Aid, Communicable Disease Prevention, Child Abuse Recognition, & CPR training) including an additional ten hours of training per year in accordance with Step-Up to Quality Guidelines.

·         Must clear full background check.

·         Must pass health screening.

Educational Requirements

  • A minimum of a CDA, preferably an A.A. in Early Childhood Education or related field. 

Physical Requirements

·         Requirements include the ability to take frequent walks, use hands and fingers, handle objects, tools or controls, talk to and hear voices at many levels. May also be required to kneel, bend, squat or crawl.

·         A specific vision ability will be required including the ability to see close and distance, to see colors, have peripheral vision and depth perception.
