This is a grant funded position.
Position: School Safety Director
Reports To: Executive Director of Support Services
Employment Terms: 11 Months (210 Days) Employment begins January 2, 2024 and ends September 30, 2025
Position Status: Classified- Exempt
Salary Range: Local Salary Schedule for Classified Staff
Job Summary: The School Safety Director will supervise the security of school facilities and work proactively to ensure a safe and secure environment for the safety of students, staff, and visitors. The Safety Director also will provide leadership, administrative, managerial, and technical, skills and abilities required for the position.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma and completion of sufficient post-secondary education, training, and/or military service to successfully perform the duties of the position required.
  • A minimum of 10 years experience in law enforcement or related experience
  • Current Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Certification (POST) or the ability to reinstate a previously held POST certification required. Other emergency management training and certifications may be considered.
  • Coursework, training, or certification in public safety, School Safety and security, emergency services, emergency management, or related disciplines
  • Strong organizational, communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional writing and verbal communication skills, including in the context of drafting policies, procedures, training materials, and informational reports
  • Knowledge of emergency management/emergency preparedness methodology, preferably in a public school district or other governmental entity
  • Strong knowledge of law enforcement, school security, and criminal justice procedures, practices, and related codes and laws
  • Working knowledge of security-related technology
  • Skilled in developing and providing training to small and large groups
  • Successful experience with a law enforcement agency, governmental entity, or educational institution
  • Georgia Motor Vehicle Operator's license and ability to provide own transportation

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate Degree or higher
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • A minimum of 5 years supervisory experience

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensures the safety and security of students, staff, visitors, and school district property in accordance with school district policies to help provide an educational climate that is safe and conducive to learning.
  • Coordinates district threat assessment procedures.
  • Serves as the contact for school and district staff in emergency situations and coordinates district response along with follow-up and debriefing.
  • Responds to and make decisions related to critical incidents and crime scenes.
  • Leads district and School Safety planning, works with the Emergency Management Agency and other emergency responders to ensure the plans are reviewed, and assists administration with the implementation of School Safety plans.
  • Maintains an emergency service providers list and ensures it is available to all schools and departments. Writes and coordinates the dissemination of administrative and policy directives.
  • Responds to emergency situations including, but not limited to, reported felony crimes in progress, fire alarms, and burglar alarms.
  • Assists administration with the planning and implementation of safety training including, but not limited to Stop the Bleed, CPR, AED, and restraint training.
  • Coordinates professional development and training to support a safe and healthy school environment. Suggested but not limited to drug and violence prevention, suicide prevention, crisis management, human trafficking, and bullying and harassment prevention.
  • Attends safety conferences and leads meetings of various school and district stakeholders to make presentations concerning safety and security efforts and/or to answer questions concerning specific events occurring within the JCSS.
  • Serves as a liaison between the school district and state and local law enforcement and emergency management agencies.
  • Cooperates and assists local school principals with safety and security issues including investigations if needed.
  • Coordinates site assessments for all JCSS facilities and properties for safety purposes inclusive of code red drills, and code yellow drills in relation to "active shooter" training and preparations.
  • Assists/advises/ research on budgetary matters pertaining to safety and security issues.
  • Provides early warning of adverse weather or other conditions impacting the safe operations of schools.
  • Works with administration to monitor buildings and grounds, including exits, and prevents unauthorized entrance and exit of school property.
  • Conducts safety and security assessments and patrols of district facilities.
  • Conduct regular safety walkthroughs with local law enforcement, EMS, GEMA, and school/department administrators.
  • Coordinates playground inspections and efforts to address identified deficiencies.
  • Responds to public/parent concerns regarding safety and security in the schools.
  • Establish partnerships within the community to provide resources and support for School Safety and security.
  • Reviews current State and Federal legislation to ensure compliance with State and Federal law regarding School Safety and security.
  • Remains available for calls on 24-hour basis seven days a week.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Support Services and/or the Superintendent.
  • Use school issued computers and related equipment, radio communications equipment, safety and law enforcement equipment
  • Safely operate vehicle
  • Safely maintain and operate firearms
  • Travels between district facilities
  • Occasional out of town travel for training and conferences may be required

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
  • Ability to work in a standard office environment and outdoors in adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time
  • Tasks that involves the regular and, at times sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
  • Ability to respond to school or department requirements at any time
