SCHEDULE: M-Thurs 1:30-9:00 p.m./197 Days (10 months)

POSITION:
The School Police Officer (SPO) supports and facilitates the educational process within the Upper St. Clair School District (USCSD) by providing a safe and secure environment through building and establishing meaningful relationships with students and staff and proactively interacting with the school community to ensure the enforcement of all pertinent laws, preservation of public order, protection of life and the prevention, detection, or investigation of crime. This position will be responsible for monitoring all campuses after school/evenings.
SUMMARY:
- Patrol district building/property for suspicious activity, unauthorized persons, or unauthorized entry hours. This will be accomplished by monitoring cameras, securing doors, patrolling campuses, ensuring correct permits, etc.
- Serve as a visible and active law enforcement officer on campus dealing with law-related areas.
- Maintain good community relations.
- Operate district equipment to include alarm systems and surveillance equipment as necessary.
- Take appropriate law enforcement action to protect students, staff and school property. Must follow the Use of Force Policy as the situation mandates.
- Work collaboratively with public safety agencies to serve as a liaison between school and community to deter criminal and delinquent behavior.
- Serve as the initial first responder for school safety emergencies.
- Provide instructions and directions to others as it pertains to safety, law enforcement matters and emergency situations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by appropriate supervisory personnel and school administrators.
- Learn and administer first aid as appropriate.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Municipal Police Academy/Act 120 Certification.
- Must have a valid drivers license.
- Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED required. A Bachelors or Associates Degree is strongly preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years of work experience in law enforcement in a traditional law enforcement agency, or school environment required.
- Must be able to demonstrate the ability to apply critical thinking skills in rendering solutions to various issues that arise on school campuses.
- Proficiency in computers, mobile devices, security systems (surveillance cameras) Microsoft Office, Outlook, and other office equipment such as incident reporting software, fax, copiers, and scanners.
- Must be able to effectively communicate with both public and school personnel; extensive communications (verbal and written) with students and staff; requires the use of sound judgment; ability to work with youth and adults.
- Knowledge of PA School Code, Criminal and Traffic Code, Criminal Procedures, Juvenile Law and court proceedings.
- Must not have any open internal affairs investigations, or child related investigations.
- Must pass criminal history and have appropriate background clearances.
- Demonstrated ability to investigate suspicious circumstances, persons, vehicles, etc. and make sound assessments.
- Required to work occasional paid overtime including evenings, weekends and athletic events as assigned by the Chief to provide security coverage.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ADA REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to walk, run, climb crawl or sit for extended periods of time.
- Work in extreme and inclement weather.
- Incumbents may be required to physically restrain parties involved in a conflict. In extreme cases, incumbents may be exposed to violent and/or armed confrontations.
- Must be able to react to and manage stressful situations.
- This position may involve exposure to blood or body fluids.
- Regular attendance is required for this position.
