Position Summary:
The LPN contributes in the implementation of the total care for disabled students. The LPN works with the multi-handicapped teacher to help disabled students develop, strengthen, and/or maintain self-care, physical, social, communication, and intellectual skills while attending to the medical needs.
Essential Duties:
  • Assess the degree and significance of the health problem in disabled students with chronic health conditions. Knowledge of signs and symptoms of impending emergencies are mandatory.
  • Observes, evaluates, and reports reactions to medications and treatments given at school and secure emergency care as needed.
  • Administers medications and treatments as prescribed by the physician to disabled students requiring such interventions.
  • Reports deviations in health status to teacher, principal, school nurse and supervisor of Health Services.
  • Confers with the school nurse about changes in a student's health, reaction to drugs or treatment on a regular basis.
  • Maintains adequate health records. Must chart and keep records per regulations set forth by Health Services.
  • Establishes priority of care.
  • Gives legitimate emergency care to all students and staff.
  • Works with the school nurse to set up and implement appropriate plan of care for disabled students.
  • Performs medical procedures according to physician's orders and standards of care.
  • Monitors students during classroom and playground activities.
  • Assists with instruction and / or activities for individuals or groups.
  • Prepares materials, set up equipment.
  • Obtains food from cafeteria and return trays.
  • Changes diapers, handle body fluids.
  • May assist with lifting students.
  • Prepares monthly documentation necessary to bill Third Party Providers for reimbursement of medical services provided as defined by the student's Individualized Education Plan, Individualized Health Care Plan, or 504 Accommodation Plan.
  • Knows and complies with district policy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • To ensure continuity of services, alternative work site may be necessary in the event of a health crisis or disruptive situation that requires the closing of school and/or office buildings. An employee's eligibility for alternative work site will be determined by the superintendent of schools. Expectations and guidelines for alternative work site will be distributed by the employee's supervisor, based on his/her role and responsibilities.

Job Specifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required):
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • A valid license by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing Registration and Nursing Education.
  • Ability to interpret and follow directions, perform basic academic tasks, assume the responsibility of the assignment, assess situation and make appropriate judgments.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding children and families.
  • Regular attendance is required for continuity of care.
  • Lifting and assisting disabled students with limited self help skills will be necessary.
  • Work is performed with patience, consistency, and endurance.

Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities):
  • Pediatric nursing experience.

Physical/Mental Requirements:
  • Must have adequate manual dexterity to write legibly and perform required duties on the computer.
  • Must have adequate visual acuity to read, interpret and transcribe written material and other required duties.
  • Requires normal range of hearing and clear speaking abilities to interact appropriately with others in person and on the telephone.
  • Requires some stooping, bending, stretching and occasional lifting from 75 to 100 pounds.
  • Sitting for prolonged periods of time.
  • May periodically require work outside of normal business hours, including weekends, under sometimes stressful conditions in order to meet business needs and strict deadlines.

Work Environment:
  • Office duties will be performed in a well-lighted, climate-controlled environment.
