Union: This position is included in the Teamsters Local Union 205 bargaining unit.
This position is part-time (on call) during the school year, 1.5 hours per day (split morning / after school).
**Selected candidate would be an on call, back up Crossing Guard in the event of a call off or emergency**
OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB:
The School Crossing Guard position in the Police Department is responsible for providing the safe movement of children to and from school when crossing roadways and intersections. The Crossing Guards scope of authority and responsibility is limited to duties as outlined and does not extend to enforcement and regulatory action. When on duty, Crossing Guards work under the supervision and direction of the Police Records Administrator.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:
1.Traffic Control
KEY MEASURES:
- Assists children to and from school safely
- Watches for traffic gaps and walks children across roadway/intersection while holding a “STOP” sign for approaching vehicles
- Creates temporary traffic gaps as necessary
- Record and report license plate numbers of drivers disregarding instruction
- Report potentially dangerous, hazardous traffic or vehicle problems to Allegheny County 911
2. Accountability
KEY MEASURES:
- Maintain issued equipment and report any lost or damaged items
- Serve the Borough in an orderly, diligent manner and exert his/her best efforts to complete the duties stated
OTHER DUTIES OF THE JOB:
This position reports immediately to the Police Records Administrator if unable to report to designated location as scheduled. This position requires regular prompt attendance and must be available during morning and afternoon hours within the same day.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED FROM:
Supervision is received from the Police Records Administrator.
MENTAL DEMANDS/QUALIFICATIONS TYPICAL OF THIS POSITION:
This position requires the Crossing Guard to be 18 years of age or older; the ability to provide safe crossing of school children or pedestrians; the ability to work independently with minimum supervisor; maintain a neat, clean appearance while on duty and wear weather appropriate clothing; the ability to work effectively with children and parents; the ability to display good judgement and respond quickly to emergencies.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS TYPICAL OF THIS POSITION:
This position requires the ability to clearly observe vehicle and pedestrian traffic at acceptable distances; the ability to work outdoors in inclement weather; the ability to walk and stand for periods of time (minimum one hour); the ability to hold a hand-held “STOP” sign above the head in an upright position. This position requires Crossing Guards to be in good physical condition that will permit adequate job performance.
WORKING CONDITIONS TYPICAL OF THIS POSITION:
This position typically requires work performed outside and is subject to the elements: heat, cold and wet conditions. Exposure to environmental and/or physical hazards is possible.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience
High School Diploma or Equivalent
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS:
Pennsylvania Driver’s License.
*Must be willing to obtain the following clearances: ACT 34 (State Police), ACT 114 (FBI), and ACT 151 (Child Abuse).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES TYPICAL OF THIS POSITION:
Accurately complete bi-weekly timesheet and submit the timesheet to the Police Records Administrator by payroll deadline.
