Job Description
Under the joint oversight of the Superintendent of East Union Community School and the Chief Juvenile Court Officer, the School-Based Juvenile Court Liaison will be an employee of the East Union Community School District.
This position is designated to support student achievement behaviorally and academically. The liaison will perform specified duties relating to young people under the supervision of the Juvenile Court Office and referred by the administration. The juvenile court school liaison will provide on-site services at the middle and high school to children experiencing truancy or other behavior problems at school and at home or in the community.
Position Responsibilities:
Juvenile Probation Services:
- Aids in the supervision and counseling of juveniles under Juvenile Court Services supervision.
- Communicate regularly with Juvenile Court Officers and parents.
- Coordinates services provided by various agencies to assigned juveniles and their families.
- Consults/coordinates with school officials on each probationer's educational progress.
- Provides direct supervision sufficient to maintain appropriate school behavior.
- Makes home and community visits as needed to insure compliance with school and probation programs.
- May transport children to/from school as needed.
- Responsible for the implementation of all Juvenile Court orders and dispositions of juveniles on caseload.
- Provide formal reports or testimony on client status if required.
- Administer and monitor of substance abuse testing requested by Juvenile Court Officers.
- Keep files for each student, tracking the behavior modification progress.
- Organize and supervise community services assignments, if necessary, during summer months.
- Other duties as assigned which may include special programming during summer months.
- Will attend an annual mandatory JCSL conference and other trainings, as determined by the Chief Juvenile Court Officer each year.
Delinquency Prevention Activities:
- Counsel's youth at-risk of delinquent activity.
- Provides information regarding juvenile crime and consequences to students of the East Union Community School District.
- Makes home and community visits as needed.
Direct Assistance to JCO students and students referred by administration:
- Counsel's youth at-risk of delinquent activity.
- Provides information regarding juvenile crime and consequences to students of the East Union Community School District.
- Makes home and community visits as needed.
- Explain procedures, rules and expectations to students.
- Be available to mediate conflicts as needed.
- Keep administration informed of students who are not making adequate progress.
- Provide report data related to student contacts and involvement as required.
- Assist students, his/her family with re-entry from out of home placement
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
- Knowledge of Juvenile Court law, procedures and processes.
- Knowledge of the East Union Community School District procedures and policies related to truancy.
- Ability to work under pressure, handle crises effectively.
- Ability to communicate with others.
- Ability to express ideas orally and in writing.
- Participate in training opportunities available through Juvenile Court Services and the East Union Community School District.
Education, Experience and Special Requirements:
At least 21 years of age, minimum of a bachelor's degree in counseling, criminal justice, sociology, or related social sciences. Must agree to criminal and child abuse record checks. (An AA/AS degree may be substituted if combined with a minimum of two years experience in a human services field). Experience is preferred. Must have a clear criminal and child abuse record (record checks shall be conducted by the Contractor). Must possess a valid Iowa motor vehicle operator's license.
