Job Description
Under general supervision, performs unskilled work in the collection and disposal of solid waste materials. Work involves assisting Sanitation Equipment Operators and occasionally driving small trash truck to assist with trash and debris pick up.
Job Responsibilities
- Assists Sanitation Equipment Operators with traffic control.
- Drives small trash truck if needed.
- Receives and/or reviews various forms, reports, correspondence, policies, directories, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation such as instructions from Sanitation Equipment Operator for traffic control, etc.
- Prepares and/or processes a variety of documentation associated with department operations, per established procedures and within designated timeframes; reviews various documentation for accuracy and completeness; and distributes/issues various documentation.
- Refers to policy and procedure manuals, codes/laws/regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.
- Operates a variety of equipment and machinery (such as small trash truck, etc.).
- Uses a variety of tools (such as pitchfork, shovel, rakes etc.); and a variety of supplies (such as safety equipment, stop and go paddles, etc.).
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals (such as Crew Leader, Street Manager, coworkers, other department heads and staff, and the general public).
- Performs litter control.
- Provides assistance as necessary in emergency situations and during afterhours or inclement weather conditions.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Education and Experience
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent supplemented by relevant maintenance experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license. **Note: Must pass a criminal background check and drug screen in order to be eligible for hire.

- Knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Street Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Sanitation Equipment Operator Assistant.
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in sanitation work.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the industry.
- Knowledge of how to perform duties in a courteous manner and with the utmost integrity in the best interest of the public.
- Knowledge of how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
- Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures and related information.
- Ability to use tools and equipment and operate vehicles/equipment with skill and safety.
- Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
- Ability to perform work effectively despite exposure to adverse environmental conditions, including temperature extremes, wetness/humidity, rain, machinery hazards, skin irritants, toxic agents, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, extreme noise levels, traffic hazards, etc.
- Ability to perform required mathematical calculations with accuracy.
- Ability to prepare simple records and forms with accuracy and in a timely manner.
- Ability to read and interpret various materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.
- Ability to use independent judgment in performing routine tasks.
- Ability to offer assistance to fellow employees as necessary.
- Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions as required.
Physical Requirements
Tasks involve the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which involves the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds) and occasionally heavy items (up to 100 pounds).
