Position Summary
The Safety Specialist will be responsible for implementing and maintaining the University’s safety programs in research, academic and nonacademic facilities. This position will support the occupational safety and health program with a primary focus on research related activities. Additional responsibility will involve inspections of university facilities and laboratories, monitoring compliance with regulatory guidelines and University policies.
Hiring Salary Range: $65,000 to $75,000
Requirements
- Bachelor in a science-related field
- In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
- 3 years of related experience

- Skills
- Experience in safety requirement and compliance related to laboratories.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge for Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently.
- Ability to walk long distances and lift items up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to wear ½ face and full face respiration protection.
Essential Functions
- Develop, implement, and maintain laboratory compliance programs in accordance with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
- Conduct hazard assessments and annual laboratory inspections of research and teaching laboratories and facilities.
- Provide basic emergency response and investigation in case of chemical spills or incidents.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with relevant safety regulations.
- Review, updates, and drafts policies, guidelines, and procedures for chemical, biological, and physical hazards and processes.
Additional Functions
- Ability to provide comprehensive laboratory safety training to laboratory personnel.
- Abilities to be trained in multidiscipline roles in areas of life safety, fire safety, biological and radiation inspections.
- Ability to perform assigned duties on Crisis Management Team.
- Serve as essential personnel in support of campus laboratories and facilities in emergency situations and adverse weather conditions.
Workplace Requirements
- Must be able and willing to wear personal protective equipment, including respirators, and respond to health and safety emergencies
- Must be willing to work with hazardous materials
- Must be able to lift 40 lbs and climb stairs
- On campus work schedule (not hybrid)
