POSITION SUMMARY:                

Assist in the development, implementation and enforcement of all safety and environmental policies/procedures in accordance with state and federal regulations.  Assist in the development and implementation of procedures within the organization that effectively control accident and health exposures in the workplace. Review, evaluate, and analyze work environments and design programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, and biological agents or ergonomic factors To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. GEOGRAPHIC REGION:

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Required

  • Minimum (3) years of safety working experience at Industrial Sites comparable to a terminal environment.
  • In lieu of safety experience in comparable Industrial Sites, a bachelor's degree in safety related field with knowledge of the O.S.H.A regulations and D.O.T.
  • Must have a High School diploma or equivalent
  • Ability to communicate in English (read, write and speak) effectively in a business environment at an Intermediate level.
  • Must possess Intermediate computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook. 
  • Must have a clean, valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to exercise independent judgment in determining hazardous situations/scenarios while performing audits.
  • Must be able to think logically and analyze (problem solve; collect data and draw valid conclusions).
  • Must be able to consistently meet deadlines
  • Must be able to initiate and complete relevant metric reports
  • Must be able to work independently and with limited supervision while abiding by company guidelines. Strong self-initiative.
  • Must be able deal effectively with employees and the public. Well-developed interpersonal skills.
  • Must have high energy level, comfortable performing multifaceted projects in conjunction with normal activities
  • Must have strong time-management and organizational skills.  Must be able to prioritize.
  • Must have flexibility to work extended hours, holidays and weekends, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Preferred

  • Experience in the maritime industry.
  • Knowledge of EPA and DEP
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish (read, write and speak) effectively in a business environment at an Intermediate level.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary

  • Perform all functions in accordance with operation and safety guidelines
  • Develop, implement and ensure compliance of all safety policies/procedures in accordance with state and federal regulations as well as established company policy.
  • Coordinate and conduct Safety Committee meetings.
  • Ensure that corrective actions are performed on all deficiencies or hazards discussed and/or identified.
  • Perform Safety Accident Investigations as needed and ensure that they are completed in a timely manner and that preventative action has been implemented.
  • Coordinate communication of accident and prevention measures to all applicable departments and employees.
  • Perform Drug and Alcohol tests on employees when necessary and/or as part of the Safety Accident Investigation Process
  • Conduct audits and inspections of the workplace. Make suggestions to correct deficiencies to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Update and maintain all department logs, employee files and company records as necessary to demonstrate compliance with all state and federal laws and programs in the areas of Health, Safety, Environmental and Hazardous Materials compliance.
  • Maintain a safe working environment by complying with established procedures, company policy, local and federal rules and regulations. 

Secondary

  • Coordinate, assist and perform Safety Trainings as deemed necessary by Management
  • Work closely with Safety Team to coordinate and carry out special projects
  • Assist contractors who are working on projects affecting the facilities
  • Assess new developments in the health, environmental, and safety field that may have application to the company's operations
  • Maintain communication with all levels of state and federal compliance bodies as necessary.
  • Prepare reports as needed
  • Perform additional duties as needed
  • Maintain a clean work area, free of debris or safety hazards and awareness of surroundings (i.e. vehicles, people, equipment, etc.) at all times

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • The employee is continuously required to use their hands and fingers
  • The employee continuously is required to talk and/or hear
  • The employee is continuously required to sit
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty (20) pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

 

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Report safety hazards
  • Immediately report incidents involving injury, illness, or property damage
  • Wear protective PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) as instructed or necessary
  • Comply with all company safety policies, procedures, and rules
  • Refuse any unsafe task or operation
  • Participate in safety meetings and training
  • Be constantly aware of their personal safety and that of their coworkers

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

Receives direct supervision from Safety Supervisor and/or Director of Compliance.  Does not exercise supervision over any other position.

 

CONDITIONS:

  • Mostly indoors with some outdoor interchangeably 
  • Exposed to controlled temperature environment while indoors and exposed to changing weather conditions when outdoors
  • Drive automotive vehicle, occasionally required to bend
  • Occasionally exposure to all possible environmental factors such as extreme heat, rain, wind and high humidity during day and night shifts when outdoors
  • The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to dust, fumes, gases and airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Moderate to high noise volume when working in outdoors environment 
  • The noise level in the indoors work environment is usually moderate due to telephones and employees that approach the
