Job description

The Safety & Emergency Preparedness Coordinator will be responsible for Employee and Patient Safety programs. Aids with Employee Health programs and Workers Compensation. Patient and Employee safety education for hospital employees in all departments as requested by department directors and for other community groups and agencies upon request. Available for consultation by staff, patients, other agencies, and individuals when questions or problems arise. Maintains DNV, OSHA, and worker’s compensation compliance in areas related to Employee Health and Safety.

Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of plans and strategic and operational procedures and protocols to execute emergency management functions.
  • Review incident action plans and provide input on emergency management goals and objectives.
  • Develop and implement emergency management systems and ensure that they comply to state and company regulations.
  • Create incident management reports, including organizational charts and job action sheets.
  • Inspect facilities and equipment used in emergency management operations to ensure that they are working properly.
  • Develop and maintain effective liaison with federal, state, and county departments and municipalities to facilitate emergency plan development and response effort coordination.
  • Develop and circulate instructional materials to educate and inform personnel about potential security threats and ways of dealing with them.
  • Coordinate the logistics of disaster response or crises management activities including evacuations and implement special needs programs and plans.
  • Utilizes appropriate community resources, identifies new resources, and reports to the Greater Regional Health administration and committees, including Quality Committee, Emergency Preparedness Committee, Safety Committee etc.
  • Collaborates with Union County Board of Health: identifying goals from Union County Board of Health, Iowa Department of Public Health and GRH – collaborating with these entities to provide needed services and reporting out appropriately.
  • Collaborates with Service Area 1C Coalition Partners.
  • Collaborate with various departments and agencies to provide emergency management support to company personnel.
  • Involved with grant writing requests, implementation and appropriately develops cost reports and bills for grants and public funding.
  • Develop and execute health and safety plans in the workplace according to authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ).
  • Prepare and enforce policies to establish a culture of health and safety.
  • Develop and evaluate policies, procedures, and best practices, for Emergency Preparedness and Safety.
  • Develop and conduct training and presentations for Emergency Preparedness and safety matters.
  • Inspect equipment and machinery to observe possible unsafe conditions.
  • Investigate accidents or incidents to discover root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Responsible for the physical safety and security requirements from the authority having jurisdiction and GRH policies and procedures.
  • Recommend solutions to issues, improvement opportunities or new prevention measures.
  • Report on health and safety awareness, issues and statistics.
  • Work with Employee Health Coordinator on worker’s compensation cases, which includes claims administration, medical case management, and recording/reporting according to state and federal regulations.
  • Works in collaboration with staff on issues of patient/employee safety and worker’s compensation.
  • Works with Bio Med services to assure that equipment safety checks are completed and equipment functions safely.
  • Responsible for Safety portion of new employee orientation and yearly staff education requirements.
  • Works to assure that all hazardous chemicals are properly stored, used and disposed of and that proper PPE and spill kits are available. Coordinates access to updated Safety Data Sheet information.
  • Works in collaboration with Infection Preventionist & Employee Health to meet program needs.
  • Collaborates with Facilities Director to develop Safety Management Plan.

Skills, Education and Experience:

  • Certification/Completion of all NIMS and ICS training courses on hire or within 6 months.
  • Organization, management skills, communications skills, able to multi-task, and a thorough attention to detail that can help him or her to create detailed plans that minimize the frustrations of emergencies caused by natural disasters or other unexpected events.
  • Experience of at least three years with varied clerical activities desired.
  • Skills in medical terminology desirable.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Prior experience with MS Office applications required.
  • Flexible and dependable.
  • Nursing degree, or related engineering or health care degree.
  • Two years satisfactory experience in patient and employee safety and health and worker’s compensation case management desired.
