Description
Are you passionate about public and employee safety, and looking for a challenging internship opportunity? TriMet is seeking motivated Safety and Security Division Interns to join our team!
As a Safety Division Intern, you will have the unique opportunity to support TriMet's agency-wide Safety & Security program in compliance with federal and state guidelines and regulations, including the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Oregon Administrative Rules (OARs), Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
In this role, you will work closely with our team of Safety and Security professionals and gain hands-on experience in a variety of safety-related projects and initiatives. Your responsibilities may include:
  • Gaining proficiency in collecting and cleaning datasets for TriMet's heatmap project.
  • Analyzing safety data and assisting with the development of safety performance metrics.
  • Learning the Safety and Security department's technology tools, including video surveillance, access management, and online or internal databases.
  • Conducting research on best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Creation of curriculum for the internal training of use of TriMet's surveillance system.
Communication with TriMet employees in multiple departments to gain a thorough understanding of the video surveillance system, its uses and users, and current gaps in training.

Essential Functions
  1. Assist with development of relevant project plans, policies, procedures, databases, or other documentation.
  2. Conduct routine assessments in the TriMet system or at TriMet garages and buildings that help inform projects.
  3. May represent safety or security in particular project work with all divisions and departments in the organization.
  4. Support the agency-wide Safety Management System and Agency Safety Plan.
  5. Learn department technology tools, to potentially include video surveillance, access management, and online or internal databases.
  6. Assist in capturing data and review reports of security or safety issues.
  7. Assist in video review of security incidents as needed.
  8. Assist in security or safety centric initiatives such as incident root cause analysis and mitigation planning.
  9. Apply knowledge of best practices within specific focus of safety or security.
  10. Research, analyze, and interpret safety or security data or video.
  11. Under supervision, apply relevant laws, rules, and policies.

Position Requirements
Must be a current Junior, Senior, or Grad Student pursuing a degree in Safety Management, Engineering Management, Risk Management, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Emergency Preparedness/Management, Business Management, Public Administration, Homeland Security, Fire Science, Public Health, Urban or Metropolitan Planning, Industrial or Occupational Health, Security, Criminal Justice, or a related field.
Grads who have completed their degrees in the past 12-month period will also be considered.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Type of Position / Grade / FLSA
Non-Exempt, Non-Union, Full-Time (40 hours/week), Temporary. Internships will run May/June through August/September.
Wage
Interns will be paid $21/hour
Selection Process
Candidates will be selected based at a minimum on the result of:
