Axle Informatics is a scientific research and information technology company that offers innovative computer science services, informatics, and bioresearch solutions to research centers and healthcare organizations around the globe. We work with some of the top research organizations and facilities in the country including multiple institutes at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The Engineering team is in charge of helping NCATS develop automation products, optimize product design and validate the most compelling automation systems for our clients . The intern will work cross-functionally with the automation engineers, chemists, biologists, and IT and help support various engineering and scientific teams throughout the whole design cycle of a given system. The intern will be expected to learn fast, solve problems in a fundamental way, and communicate internally and externally to drive decision making. The intern will be working on development and integration of systems that include robotic arms, mobile robots, linear actuators, computer vision, sensors, etc. They will also be working on development of software written in Python capable of operating said systems.

Instead of going on coffee runs and making copies, you'll be seated at the table making critical decisions that will influence not only your team, but the overall achievement of NCATS's mission.
About the team
The Engineering team is in charge of helping NCATS develop automation products, optimize product design and validate the most compelling automation systems for our customers. For this purpose, the team is responsible for designing, building, and deploying robotics and automated equipment to support current and future products and collecting data to enable their reliability and functionality.
Responsibilities
This will include (but is not limited to) the following:
• Development of robust and flexible hardware and software tools, robots and automation platforms to automate scientific equipment.
• Contribute to the design and execution at the product and component level including hands on testing with real hardware.
• Contribute to the automation and standardization of our data pipelines.
• Contribute to process development and improvement plans.
Qualifications
• Currently working towards a BS/MS or advanced degree in electrical/computer engineering, mechatronics, robotics, physics, or equivalent.
• Hands-on experience debugging SW and HW issues within a network of systems.
• Hands-on experience, previous internship and/or project experience is preferred.
• Major interest in solving complex and time critical problems.
• Strong knowledge of Python.
• Experience with robotics and automation systems.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Nice to have:
• Experience with data structures, architectures, and languages such as C++
• Experience with tools like LabView, Solidworks, etc.
• Experience with basic hardware design.
• Experience with computer vision and machine learning.
