Summary
This summer internship is anticipated to take place from June through September 2024 for a total of 12-weeks. Start dates can be flexible.
The Department of Local Services Road Services Division is seeking three Engineer Interns to join our highly skilled and dedicated team. Through collaboration with engineers, project managers, contractors, and support services, you will gain hands-on experience with Roads Capital Projects and learn about project planning, design, and implementation. This is an exciting opportunity to provide support to Roads projects such as bridges, structures, roadways, sidewalks, culvert replacements, and fish passage.
Based on candidate experience, you will have the opportunity to apply for the following positions:

  • Drainage Engineer Intern (1)
The Road Services Division designs, builds, operates, and maintains roads and bridges in unincorporated King County. The division is a 24-hour per day, 7 day a week operation with work site locations in Renton, Downtown Seattle, and several remote field locations. The division is responsible for 1,500 miles of road, 185 bridges, 5.7 million feet of drainage ditches, over 44,000 traffic control signs,78 traffic signals, and 50 traffic cameras in unincorporated King County.

The intern(s) will work with team members to:
  • Assist with project management, structural design, and/or inspections
  • Assist with preparation, review and evaluation of engineering plans, specifications, cost estimates, right of way plans and legal descriptions (may involve field visits) for Capital Projects
  • Assist senior engineers with coordinating, monitoring and controlling project scope, schedule, and budget
  • Assist supervisor in developing, modifying, and maintaining work order contracts, Architecture and Engineering contracts, and other contracts as needed
  • Participate in design review meetings
  • Collaborate with support services associated with the project which includes Materials Laboratory, Survey, Environmental, Traffic and involved private utilities
  • Support Engineer staff on various tasks as assigned

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
  • Experience in or knowledge of civil or structural engineering Experience in or knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3d or GIS

Who may apply?
This position is open to undergraduate and graduate students who are currently enrolled as a full-time student and continuing in the fall of 2024 from an accredited institution. You must provide proof of full-time enrollment upon hire, and for each quarter or semester during the regular school year. Current students in civil engineering, construction management, public administration, or closely related fields are encouraged to apply.
Salary Information
  • Intern II - Undergraduate pay range is $20.10 to $22.48/hourly
  • Intern III - Graduate pay range is $22.63 to $28.69/hourly?

Job Details
  • Work Location: A combination of teleworking and in-office work at the King Street Center (201 S. Jackson St., Seattle WA 98104). Occasional in-person work at various King County facilities or project locations may also be required.
  • Work Hours & Schedule: This full-time position works 40- hours per week - 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM Monday through Friday, or as otherwise negotiated.
  • FLSA Status: This position is non-exempt from the overtime provision of the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
  • Union Representation: This position is not union represented.

?Teleworking RequirementsEmployees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
When teleworking, you are required to have an adequate home office space and maintain a workspace with an internet connection where you can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours. The county will supply necessary IT equipment. In addition, King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely.
