Bi-weekly Salary:
Road Maintenance Worker III: $1,800.63 - $1,973.72
The Del Norte County Community Development Department is seeking a qualified candidate to fill one (1) vacancy for the position of Road Maintenance Worker III. This position is classified as Full-Time.
This is a skilled-level class in the Road Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents in this class must demonstrate a high degree of skill and independent judgment in operating heavy-duty equipment on a regular basis.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the advanced level class in the Road Maintenance series. This class is distinguished from the Senior Road Maintenance Worker by the on-going lead responsibility for a work crew.
Detailed Work Activities
Essential job duties may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.
  • Assists in construction of fences, guardrails, and/or various other structures.
  • Assists the road crew in the performance of basic road construction including building, paving, patching, and smoothing.
  • Implements route and grade specifications established by engineering personnel.
  • Installs, maintains and replaces traffic control and informative signs.
  • Loads and secures materials and equipment on trucks for transportation.
  • Maintains safety standards and procedures in compliance with State and local regulations during the operation of Road Maintenance and construction equipment and in performing manual tasks.
  • Makes operating adjustments and minor repairs to equipment such as changing buckets and teeth and tightening loose bolts and hydraulic couplings.
  • Manufactures and rebuilds traffic signs in the shop using various processes and sign painting techniques.
  • Monitors road conditions routinely and clears roads, ditches and access areas as required.
  • Monitors and reviews informational updates on the operation and servicing of heavy and light road construction equipment. Inspects equipment, performs preventative maintenance and reports needed repairs.
  • Operates hand and power tools in the performance of road, ditch, access area, and/or culvert clearance work.
  • Operates various pieces of heavy equipment during road construction and maintenance including bulldozers, boom-truck, grades, tilt-trailers, truck-mounted excavators, and/or various related equipment.
  • Operates equipment for painting, striping, and detail work on new and existing roads.
  • Operates sign making equipment, including tracking inventory used and properly installing road signs, barricades.
  • Occasionally operates and maintains truck mounted paint traffic striping unit and walk-behind striping unit used to paint center lines, edge lines and lane stripes.
  • Operates and maintains stencil truck used for control marking.
  • Operates and maintains a powered high lift boom truck to respond to traffic light malfunctions and the trimming and topping of trees along County rights-of-way and other county operated areas.
  • Operates light trucks in the performance of routine duties.
  • Performs traffic monitoring and flagging for road construction crews.
  • Performs yard and maintenance duties including sweeping, mopping shelving, mowing, and/or garbage disposal.
  • Performs general patrolling duties, inspecting and cleaning roads, access areas, and/or other problems spots.
  • Prepares and submits inventories of material and supplies used and/or transported.
  • Stays abreast of current information on the operation and servicing of light road construction equipment.
  • Transports and tows various pieces of heavy and/or light equipment from one location to another.
  • Transports personnel, fuel, tools, and/or other materials to and from various locations.
  • Performs related duties as required.
Special Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's license.
All County of Del Norte employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through State law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County of Del Norte requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Work related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education, training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year progressively responsible related experience as a laborer in construction or landscaping work and in the operation of heavy road equipment involving moving solid material such as sand or gravel; utilizing equipment or hand tools in the clearing and maintenance of land or road construction.
OR
  • Other related work requiring a Class A Commercial Driver's license.

Special Requirements:
• Possession of a valid California Class A Commercial Driver's License. The license must meet the following requirements:
• Tank vehicles endorsement
• Interstate commerce status unless under 21 years old
• Must not have any restrictions that would preclude driving a manual transmission, driving any Class A vehicle with a fifth wheel connection or demonstrate failure to pass the Air Brakes Knowledge Test.
OR
• Ability to obtain a valid California Class A Driver's License within the six (6) month probationary period with two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in the operation of heavy equipment. The special requirements listed apply.
Other Requirements:
• Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License or equivalent from another state at time of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Note: The level and scope of the knowledge and skills listed below are related to job duties as defined under Distinguishing Characteristics.
Knowledge of:
  • Simple power and hand tools.
  • The provision of the California Vehicle Code applying to the operation of heavy truck and safe driving practices.
  • The procedures, methods, and tools of road construction maintenance.

Ability to:
  • Learn the methods, practices, and procedures of basic Road Maintenance and construction; and the operation of heavy trucks.
  • Maintain cooperative relationship with others.
  • Operate heavy and light road equipment.
  • Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under unfavorable conditions.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and specifications.
  • Skillfully and safely operate a variety of heavy maintenance equipment.
  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Work in elevated places.
  • Work in elevated places.

Selection Process:

Paid annual leave:
Vacation:
1-5 years of continuous service: 10 working days per year; 6-10 years of continuous service: 15 working days per year; 11-15 years of continuous service: 20 working days per year; 16 years or higher of continuous service: 25 working days per year. Note - Vacation will be available for use after completion of six (6) months of continuous employment.
Sick Leave:
1 day of sick leave with pay for each month of service from the date of employment. Note - Sick leave may be used upon accrual.
Holidays:
13 working days each year.
Floating Holidays:
3 working days each fiscal year. Note - Floating Holidays may be used upon accrual.
Retirement:
The County is a member of the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) integrated with Social Security.
Group Insurance:
The County pays a portion of the employee's group health, dental, and life insurance premiums with dependent health and dental care benefits available at group rates.
