JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
OPEN IN-HOUSE (3 DAYS)
JOB TITLE: Road Maintenance II
DEPARTMENT: Public Services/ Roads Program
EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Regular, Full-Time
SALARY: $ 17.72 /Hr.
CLASS: Covered; Non-Exempt
OPENING: March 11, 2024
CLOSING: March 13, 2024
This is a second level position for the Hualapai Roads Program. Duties include operation of smaller
motorized machinery, pavement care and preservation, roadside shoulder restoration and repairs,
signing and striping, delivery of equipment and materials, environmental compliance, vehicle and
equipment care, patching potholes, and other various transportation projects. You will execute
routine Road Maintenance services and activities within the Road Maintenance program in reference
to the 82 BIA Road Maintenance handbook & 25 CFR 170 for specification, standards, quality
assurance, and control checks.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates smaller equipment: fork lift, loader, jackhammer, chainsaw, mowers, sweepster,
    air compressor, wood chipper.
  • Performs general labor by using various hand tools (e.g., shovels & rakes) in the
    maintenance of roadways and transportation facilities.
  • Breaks and removes surfaces; digs, shovels, hauls and loads and unloads spoils, sands,

asphalt mixes and other materials.
  • Performs brush clearance, tree removal and weed control work
  • Maintains basic records of daily work performed.
  • Operates two-way radio in trucks and base station.
  • Performs snow removal, ice control and storm patrol work.
  • Paints guardrails, shovel dirt, maintain steps and pedestrian walkways, observe and assist
    with road seals and cracks.
  • Performs traffic monitoring and control, including the distribution of barricades, warning
    signs, safety cones and/or the flagging of vehicles
  • Conducts inventory of road signage and guardrails and other features necessary to control
    traffic and protect the road and the traveling public.
  • Performs maintenance on parking facilities such as striping lots, sidewalks and painting
    curbs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by higher authority.
  • Unusual Working Conditions: Works outside exposed to weather (e.g., including rain,
    lightening, humidity & hot temperatures in summer time loud noise from equipment &
    traffic, exposed to insects such as bees, mosquitoes, flies & spiders; exposed to rodents to include mice & rats; exposed to stray dogs, dirt, dust, fumes, poison ivy/sumac & pollen. Will be exposed to potential occupational risks such as bums, cuts and exposure to hazardous fluids, and WORKING ALONE IN ISOLATED AREAS.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent or may be able to obtain HS/GED within 12
    to 18 months from hire date.
  • At least one to two years related training at a technical trade school; or any
    combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the
    knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations in off hours as required within 30 minutes of emergency.
  • Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action; cooperate with co-workers on group projects; demonstrate strength to lift 50-100 pounds.
  • Knowledge of all air tools and their operation.
  • Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to work independently in a timely manner, making sure job is done correctly the first time.
  • Data entry utilizing iWorQs and GIS.
  • Must be able to read simple sentences.
  • Must cooperate with co-workers on group projects.
  • Must be able to back up pickup truck with trailer attached.
  • Excellent customer service skills with desire to exceed expectations.
  • Required to exert physical effort in handling and lifting 50-100 pounds.

Other:

  • Must possess or have the physical ability to attain and maintain a valid Arizona
    Commercial Driver's license, Class B with Air Brake within six (6) months of
    appointment to the position (please see State of Arizona eligibility requirements).
  • Must be able to respond to emergency situations in non-working hours as
    required, responding within an hour.

NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must have a valid driver's license, pass a MVD screening and be eligible for the Tribe's Insurance.
  • Must be able to pass drug testes) as required by Tribe.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    • Will be exposed to potential occupational risks such as burns, cuts and exposure to hazardous fluids, and WORKING ALONE IN ISOLATED AREAS.
    • Exposure to physical environment which includes dust, noise, odors, extreme weather or other similar elements.
    • Noise from mechanical tools and equipment.
    • Unusual Working Conditions: Works outside exposed to weather (e.g., including rain, lightening, floods, humidity & hot temperatures in summer time loud noise from equipment & traffic, exposed to insects such as bees, mosquitoes, flies & spiders; exposed to rodents to include mice & rats; exposed to stray dogs, dirt, dust, engine exhaust, fumes, poison ivy/sumac & pollen.
