Responsibilities:
Nursing responsibilities for IV therapy include inserting, monitoring and removing an IV used to give medications, blood products and nutrition to a patient. Many employers prefer to hire IV therapy nurses with medical-surgical experience or knowledge in phlebotomy and venous access, both of which deal with the collection of blood. An IV therapy nurse must be able to work independently, as well as on a team, and must be able to communicate with patients clearly while giving instructions.
During the IV therapy, the nurse monitors the patient for adverse reactions and ensures that the tubing, bandages and needle stay in place. When a patient needs blood gas levels checked, an IV nurse performs vein and artery punctures. During the entire IV therapy process, the nurse documents all patient-related activities and records the medications she uses.
We may also draw labs at the beginning or end of IV therapy. No arterial punctures.
RN, LPN, and Paramedic candidates will be eligible for this position.
The products infused will include Venofer and possibly Injectofer, and the various ingredients alone or together in a Meyers Cocktail. If you have experience infusing those materials, please indicate that on your application.
Your responsibilities will include, assessment of the patient, use of a standard kit to start an IV and administer the products according to the standard protocol. Sometimes you will stay to monitor for the entire infusion. Sometimes you will start the infusion and I will monitor and d/c at the end, but the pay will be the same. We may draw labs at the beginning or end of therapy.
Most infusions should be complete within one hour with the line d/c and patient on their way. Four hour infusions will be scheduled at the convenience of all parties, as well as with one hour infusions. In the beginning, infusions will be performed at pt homes or in offices, so we will be mobile in your vehicle, reimbursement for travel will be provided at double the standard federal business rate which is greater than medical rate. As the pace of infusions increases we will move to an office space for this purpose.
All standard state and federal guidelines will be followed according to standard protocols.
