BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:
The primary function of the Clinical Surgery RN is to serve as the coordinator for the physician(s) and as the patients' direct liaison to their physician and other clinicians. This position provides perioperative patient management in collaboration with other healthcare providers, intraoperative surgical first-assisting, and postoperative patient management. Participates in the coordination of OR and clinic schedules, inventories, par levels and process improvement activities. Provide care via the telephone by utilizing organizationally approved telephone nursing guidelines and protocols for scheduling ancillary and surgery procedures, obtaining pre-certification, and patient discharge follow-up calls.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Assess the patient's condition/history, vitals, and nursing needs, sets goals, and prescribes appropriate nursing actions to meet those goals and the physical, psychological, social, and rehabilitative needs of the patient, including discharge planning. Assess, intervene, and reassess the patient's self-report/symptoms of pain promptly. Utilize an appropriate tool for assessment and reassessment (0-10 numerical scale, FACES, or the FLACC.) Demonstrate an understanding of medications with regards to action and side effects. Reports pertinent information to appropriate individual. Educates patients and significant others about their medications. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate effectiveness of nursing interventions in accomplishing goals and intended patient care outcomes. Responsible for the preparation, tracking and sterilization of equipment and instruments Provides perioperative patient management in collaboration with other healthcare providers. Provides intraoperative surgical first-assisting, including: using instruments/medical devices, providing exposure, handling and/or cutting tissue, providing hemostasis, suturing and applying dressings. Provides postoperative patient management in collaboration with other health care providers in the immediate postoperative period and beyond. Demonstrates ability to accurately perform some or all of the following functions: determine appropriate clinical details to enter/extract data for scheduling, rescheduling, and/or cancelling exams and/or surgical procedures and/or enter notes for pre-certification and follow-up, including patient discharge surveys by utilizing electronic and telephonic systems; enter patient and/or provider data into electronic system; maintain physician privilege list and/or payer requirements, etc. Proactively provides service recovery as needed; utilizes message center to communicate and resolve scheduling issues with providers/patients. Provides information to providers and/or patients regarding prescribed procedures, medications, and therapies, utilizing appropriate physician consultation; understands and explains medical terminology and procedures; identifies patient, family, physician, organization, and community resources for patients and physician consults and referrals. May complete unit/department specific duties as outlined in department documents.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Manual dexterity in the use of surgical instruments and equipment.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
General supervision is received from assigned Charge Nurse or designee.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Missouri Board of Nursing RN or Nurse Licensure Compact multi-state RN. When primary state of residency changes, compact state RNs must apply under new state of residency within thirty (30) days. One (1) year of RN experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with general, vascular, bariatric or trauma surgery. Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job. This position is very active and requires ambulating, reaching, and moving objects weighing up to and over 20 lbs. This role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
