Job description

This position is primarily working in Plover with occasional travel to Wausau.


The RN in the Pre-Op area and Recovery Room provides expert professional nursing care for the patient during the pre and post-operative course. The RN assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the care of the patient. The RN will assure that the patient is prepared for discharge by providing the necessary education to the patient and his responsible caregiver.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Pre-Post Operative RN) include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Work with all members of the health care team to provide optimal care to the patient throughout his surgical experience.
  2. Maintain a friendly, positive and caring attitude with all patients, physicians and staff.
  3. Provide patient education during all phases of the patient's experience at the Center.
  4. Ensure that the proper supplies and equipment are available in the Pre-Op and PACU.
  5. Ensure that equipment is functioning properly.
  6. Assist supervisor with preparation of budget.
  7. Charge for all supplies used in Pre-Op and PACU. Assist with inventory control by proper count of supplies/time used.
  8. Appropriately document patient care provided.
  9. Moderate Sedation competency will be completed upon hire, and every 2 years after, remain knowledgeable in the administration of moderate sedation and the management of the patient after the administration until discharge.
  10. Attend continuing education offerings to remain current with orthopedic and ASC issues.
  11. Display professionalism at work and in the community.
  12. Abide by Bone and Joint Service Standards and STUDER principles including AIDET, room and rounding.
  13. Take an active role on committees within the organization.
  14. Identify actual and potential risks to patients and others. Take action to minimize or eliminate risk and maximize safety in the facility. Use Bone and Joint S.C., protocol to report actual risks and near miss scenarios.
  15. Prepare for arrival of patients to the Surgery Center by ensuring that proper supplies and equipment are available.
  16. Review the patient chart and health history to assure that the necessary pre-operative evaluations have been completed. Ensure that consent form has been signed.
  17. Admit and prepare patients for surgery. Provide ongoing information to the patient and his caregiver to assure that they understand all procedures and feel as comfortable as possible.
  18. Perform nursing assessment of patient, start IV and administration of ordered medications.
  19. Communicate with other health care team members to assure continuity of care.
  20. Receive patient in the recovery room after surgery. Assess and evaluate the patient. Continuously monitor the patient during his recovery phase. Document the status of the patient and the care provided.
  21. Incorporate a sense of wellness by allowing the patient's family to be reunited with him as soon as feasible and by encouraging self-care by the patient.
  22. Provide discharge instructions to the patient and his caregiver, asking for confirmation of understanding.
  23. Document charges for all supplies used during the pre-op and recovery phase.
  24. Perform follow up patient assessment by calling the patient the day after surgery.
  25. Remain prepared for emergency situations by knowing correct emergency procedures, locations of emergency call system and location of emergency supplies and equipment.
  26. Ensure that Universal Precautions are maintained.
  27. Complete all necessary documentation on Recovery Room nurses' record.
  28. Assist with ordering drugs and supplies.
  29. Wipe down gurneys and recliners between patients with a germicidal solution. Remake beds as needed.
  30. Perform narcotic counts at the beginning and end of each surgical day.
  31. Perform daily crash cart checks.
  32. Perform monthly outdate/expiration audits of medications and supplies.
  33. Perform other duties as assigned.

RN Pain Procedure Room Summary: The Registered Nurse in the Pain Procedure Rotation provides expert professional nursing care for the patient during pain procedures at BJOSC. The RN assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the care of patients throughout the patient's time at BJOSC. The RN in the procedure room supervises the Operating Room Technician and/or the Radiology Technician.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities(RN Pain Procedure Room) include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

The primary responsibility of the RN is to care for the patient during the pre-operative, intraoperative and post- operative phases. This includes preparing the patient for the procedure, monitoring the patient and administering sedation when indicated, assisting the physician during the procedure and discharging the patient from BJOSC when criteria are met. The pain procedure RN also has the following responsibilities.

  1. Work with all members of the health care team to provide optimal care to the patient throughout his/her experience at BJOSC.
  2. Maintain a friendly, positive and caring attitude with all patients, physicians and staff.
  3. Assist in patient education during all phases of the patient's experience at the Center.
  4. Assure that the proper supplies, instruments and equipment are available for procedures.
  5. Assure that equipment is functioning properly.
  6. Assist supervisor with preparation of budget.
  7. Monitor use of and charge for all supplies used during a procedure. Assist with inventory control by proper count of supplies/time used.
  8. Appropriately document patient care.
  9. Attend continuing education offerings to remain current with orthopedic and ASC issues.
  10. Display professionalism at work and in the community; abide by Bone and Joint service standards and STUDER principles.
  11. Take an active role on committees within the organization.

  13. Prepare for cases by gathering supplies, instruments and equipment.
  14. Wipe flat surfaces in procedure room the morning of the procedure.
  15. Review the patient chart and health history to assure that the necessary preoperative evaluations have been completed.
  16. Assess the patient including verification of patient identification, documentation and consent of procedure to be performed, correct injection site, allergies and other pertinent patient information.
  17. Perform nursing assessment of patient, start IV and administration of medications, where applicable.
  18. Transport patient to the procedure room.
  19. Correctly position the patient for the procedure using proper positioning techniques.
  20. Moderate Sedation competency will be completed upon hire, and every 2 years thereafter, remain knowledgeable in the administration or moderate sedation and the management of the patient until discharge.
  21. Monitor for breaks in aseptic technique.
  22. Perform or monitor prep per protocol.
  23. Monitor the patient according to the policy and procedures.
  24. Remain prepared for emergency situations by knowing correct emergency procedures, locations of emergency call system and location of emergency supplies and equipment.
  25. Assist entire team throughout procedure to ensure a desired outcome.
  26. Label and send specimens to pathology according to protocol, as applicable.
  27. Ensure that Universal Precautions are maintained.
  28. At the end of the procedure, assist with securing a Band-Aid, moving the patient to the gurney
  29. Provide discharge instructions to the patient and Responsible Adult, where needed, asking for confirmation of understanding.
  30. Complete the nursing record and post charges for the procedure.
  31. Assist in cleaning of procedure room and instruments.
  32. Assist in restocking procedure room and wrapping and sterilizing instruments.
  33. Organize supplies and equipment for procedures according to physician preference cards..
  34. Keep Supervisor apprised of any equipment/instruments that are in need of repair or replacement.
  35. Perform other duties as assigned

Education/Experience:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing with a current nursing license in the state of Wisconsin. BLS, ACLS and PALS certification is required within 6 months of hire.
  • 1 year of Med-Surgical, Pre-Op/PACU, ICU, ER experience ideal but not required
  • Experience in orthopedic outpatient surgery ideal but not required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and have an ability to work compatibly with all physicians and staff.
  • Basic computer skills. Previous experience with electronic medical record desired.

Qualifications:

  • Possess strong organizational skills and a clear understanding of the importance of efficiency and cost effectiveness in an outpatient Surgery Center.
  • Knowledge and clinical skills to perform the job duties of a Pre-Op and Recovery Room nurse.
  • Ability to make quick assessments of patients and be able to handle emergency situations appropriately.
  • Physical guidelines include ability to stand/walk for up to eight hours per day; bend, stoop, twist; assist patients in turning, rising from recliners and stretchers; assist patients in and out of wheelchairs; push wheelchairs; assist with the moving of patients on and off the operating room table.
  • Valid WI Driver's license and occasional travel is required to other Bone & Joint facilities.
  • Flexibility in job duties and work schedule.
Infection Control Category: This job is designated as a Category I job using OSHA definitions. This means there are tasks that involve exposure to blood or other potentially infectious material. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for any employee engaged in Category I tasks.
