Department Overview
Doernbecher Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a 46-bed level IV, regional referral center, providing care for a patient population of critically ill, convalescing and growing premature and term newborns. Admissions come from our own high-risk perinatal department, as well as transports from other hospitals in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Hawaii.
Department Specific Working Conditions:
Provide continuing care and monitoring of NICU patients in locations outside of the NICU including MRI, CT, Nuclear Medicine, Upper GI, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, etc.
Function/Duties of Position
BSN rates are $51.50 - $74.80 hr. ADN and MSN rates also available.
Night shift position.
Hiring Bonus and Relocation Package Available. Must begin work by March 31, 2024 to qualify.
The NICU at Doernbecher Children's Hospital at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR is a regional referral center for all critically ill neonates, offering access to pediatric surgeons and subspecialists. Required Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • External applicants: Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing Degree from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA)
  • Internal applicants: Associate's Degree in Nursing
  • Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
  • BLS and NRP at time of hire and must be issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network branch of AHA (upload documentation with online application)
  • BLS and NRP must not expire during orientation or probation period (upload documentation with online application)
  • Applicants, without Neonatal ICU experience, may be considered for the position per management discretion.
  • For New Graduates, preference is for immersion in NICU during education.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Annual/Biennial Department specific education requirements include:
    • Annual pediatric/neonatal competencies
    • Biennial competency for newborn resuscitation at high risk deliveries
  • Successful completion of the NICU Orientation Program necessitates attendance during all learning activities and completion of all required work.
    • Group-based, self-directed, and preceptorship shifts are integrated throughout the program for up to 40 hours per week
    • External Candidates: Vacation, paid or unpaid leave requests up to 18-weeks from the start date are not permitted. All other vacation, paid or unpaid leave requests are subject to compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between ONA and OHSU.
    • Internal Nurse Candidates: All vacation, paid or unpaid leave requests are subject to compliance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement between ONA and OHSU. Pre-scheduled vacations or leave plans must be disclosed prior to consideration for hire to determine the start date.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Preferred Qualifications
Department Specific Preferences:
  • Internal Applicants: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Stable Certification for those with NICU experience
  • Resource: 2 years level II/III/IV experience preferred (per management discretion)
  • Bilingual: Spanish/English
  • Specialty certification specific to Neonatal Nursing

Additional Details
Individualized Orientation:
  • Residents (New Graduates): 18-20 weeks
  • Specialty Fellows (RN>1 year; no NICU Experience): 14-16 weeks
  • Fellows (experienced NICU RN): 6-12 weeks
