The Risk Manager serves as an internal consultant regarding matters pertaining to risk management, medical-legal issues, regulatory, ethical and other related issues, in order to control and minimize losses to the organization.
Education
Five to six years of formal training or education beyond the high school level (e.g., Masters Degree, Juris Doctor).
Certification, Registration & Licensure
Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management preferred. If is not already certified, certification obtained within three years.
Experience
Experience as a Risk Manager in a health care environment preferred. Requires a minimum of five years' experience in health care and law.

Responsibilities
- Serves as an internal consultant regarding questions related to legal/risk exposure.
- Investigates potential compensatory events (PCEs), assesses potential exposure or liability, makes recommendations to manager for disposition and uploads to electronic database when appropriate.
- Drafts, reviews, and revises policies, letters and documents to reduce institutional exposure and improve patient safety.
- Defends and manages requests from state licensing boards.
- Evaluates correspondence from attorneys, law enforcement agencies and other outside sources, and formulates responses as appropriate.
- Represents hospital in Probate and District Court.
- Participates in staff orientation and education programs.
- Serves as consultant to Patient Relations Coordinator.
- Shares on-call responsibilities.
- Keeps abreast of trends in risk management and medical/legal issues.
- Takes ownership and responsibility for individual performance goals.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
