About the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR):
The Indiana Department of Revenue team is comprised of over 600 staff that are located in 13 locations across the state of Indiana. We work collaboratively with the Indiana Governor's office, the General Assembly, state agencies, individuals, business owners, corporations, tax practitioners, and a variety of tax program participants to administer Indiana's tax laws. DOR administers over 65 tax types and annually processes nearly $21 billion of tax revenue. Our mission is to serve Indiana by administering tax laws in a fair, secure, and efficient manner.

Salary:
This position starts at an annual salary of $53,222 with a potential opportunity for adjustment based on the relevant experience and skill sets of the applicant. The Department utilizes three different auditor-level classifications based on acquired competencies and demonstrated skill sets. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
Role Overview:
The Revenue Tax Auditor conducts filed audits on behalf of the State of Indiana on a vast array of taxpayers. In this position, you will analyze the books and records of businesses to ensure compliance with Indiana tax laws. You will also work to ensure the highest level of customer focus, with a strong commitment to the taxpayers of Indiana through continuous, innovative methods to increase accuracy, efficiency, and productivity in all areas of departmental operations and tax administration.
Applicants must have at least 15 college credit hours of Accounting coursework. This position is located in the Department of Revenue district office in Lafayette, Indiana. Residency in the service area is highly preferred.

A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
  • Independently performs field audits on taxpayers, including international companies with numerous subsidiaries, for all listed taxes.
  • Travels within the established jurisdiction in Indiana to conduct audits; Travels outside of Indiana when required.
  • Conducts pre-audit analysis on audit files to develop a list of preliminary questions and/or areas of concern.
  • Writes audit reports, summarizing audit results clearly and concisely.
  • Clearly and diplomatically explain audit scope, audit adjustments, tax laws, and policies to taxpayer representatives to resolve misunderstandings and errors.
  • Performs administrative functions which may include preparing and updating a file inventory log, a calendar, travel vouchers, and attendance reports.
  • Interprets Indiana Tax Code, audit procedures, and regulations.
  • Auditor utilizes computer systems, the Internet, and research materials specific to the taxpayer to identify areas of potential problems.
  • Maintains records of activities and progress during examinations.
  • Conducts audits on a statistical sampling basis.
  • Provide technical assistance and training to lower-level auditors.

What You'll Need for Success:
You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, or a related field, with a minimum of 15 hours of accounting
  • Two (2) years of full-time paid experience as a Revenue Tax Auditor 2 may substitute for all required experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of accounting and auditing policies and procedures including familiarity with income tax audits of all types.
  • Ability to analyze and understand financial records and accounting systems of a wide range of business types.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, other agency and division employees, and the public
  • Broad knowledge of the rules, regulations, and policies of Federal and State Tax Laws
  • Specialized knowledge as an auditor focusing on income or franchise taxes for another state, a multinational corporation, or the Internal Revenue Service
  • Ability to respond timely and appropriately to technical questions from taxpayers and other agency staff
  • Employees may access Federal Tax Information while performing daily job duties; therefore the ability to maintain confidentiality is essential to this position.
