Job description

Job Overview:
Interprets physician prescriptions and medication orders. Compounds and dispenses prescribed medications and other pharmaceuticals and related products for patient care by performing related duties. Acts as a drug information resource for the general public and physicians and other healthcare professionals.

Duties:

  • Reviews prescriptions issued by physicians or others authorized to prescribe to assure accuracy; determines formulas and ingredients needed.
  • Compounds medications using standard formulas and processes such as weighing, measuring and mixing ingredients.
  • Compounds and dispenses prescribed medications ensuring compliance with all regulatory agencies.
  • Monitors all postings onto the patient profiles in the computer system. Ensures accuracy and that drug allergies, drug interactions, duplicate therapy, rational drug therapy and incompatibilities may be realized and better patient care received
  • Directs pharmacy personnel engaged in packaging and labeling pharmaceuticals.
  • Supervises pharmacy staff: pharmacy technician, billing clerk.
  • Maintains a professional, helpful and courteous relationship with all staff of the pharmacy/store.
  • Answers questions and provides information to physicians, nurses, patients and other healthcare professionals on the appropriate use of medications, drug interactions, side effects, dosage, storage, etc.
  • Advises the general public on over-the-counter medications to treat minor illnesses.
  • Endorses policies and procedures of the retail pharmacy.
  • Ensures the maintenance and proper operation of equipment and supplies in the pharmacy.
  • Maintains PAR levels of medications and supplies for the pharmacy; places orders as needed.
  • Maintains established procedures concerning quality control, security of controlled substances and disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Provides pharmaceutical care to all ages of patients from newborns to the elderly. Understands there are dosage variations between newborn, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients and knows where to find appropriate information.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
  • Demonstrates ability to apply necessary advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents and logarithms.
  • Able to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Able to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract variables.
  • Meets with pharmaceutical sales representatives to obtain product information.
  • Stays current in the pharmaceutical field through continuing education, conferences, professional journals and societies.
  • Answers all telephone calls in a professional manner. Takes prescriptions over the phone from healthcare professionals who are authorized to prescribe medications.
  • Obtains and enters patients' demographic and insurance information into the computer system.
  • Able to operate the cash register; able to handle cash, check and charge card sales accurately.
  • Knowledgeable of the layout of the store; able to direct customers to products.
  • Able to close-out and balance cash drawer at end of shift.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited School of Pharmacy.
  • Current Pharmacist licensure or certification in the state of Nebraska.
  • Education in all age groups ranging from newborn to the geriatric population obtained either from school education or subsequent training.
