    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Provides an alternative to traditional in-school suspension or short out-of-school suspension that focuses on correcting thinking errors, teaches and reteaches social skills and uses a restorative approach.
    • Provides targeted instruction in social emotional skill training; assess a student’s social emotional and academic needs and prescribe the right activities and tasks to help them modify behaviors with the goal of returning to a classroom setting.
    • Identifies behaviors, conducts functional behavior assessments, writes behavior intervention plans, and uses effective restorative strategies. Shares assessments and plans with the student, staff and families.
    • Provides targeted academic instruction based on teacher recommendation.
    • Works with teachers to assure students are held accountable for their behavior and academic assignments.
    • Works with the student to create a plan and expectations while in the program, which will include an area of focus for social emotional skill instruction and academic instruction. This plan may include therapeutic services, school/community services or restitution for damages caused by the behaviors.
    • Works with parents/guardians in reentry plans to the classroom.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS:
    • Bachelor's degree required in counseling, social work, or a related field; master's degree preferred.
    • At least 3 years’ experience working with students experiencing behavioral and academic difficulties in a school or community setting.
    • Must be familiar with social emotional learning competencies, trauma informed care, and restorative approach to discipline.
    • Ability to listen, problem solve and set goals with students, family and staff.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills when speaking with students, teachers, families, and other mental health professionals and while keeping detailed documentation/notes electronically.
    • Ability to take initiative, analyze student needs and implement social emotional learning strategies/programs without daily observation from a supervisor. (As this is a pilot, colleagues engaging in this work would be limited.)
    • Ability to de-escalate student, parent and staff interactions in a respectful, compassionate manner.
    • Ability to work as a productive member of a team with families, other counselors, social workers, healthcare professionals, teachers, administrators.
