Position Summary
The Washington University School of Medicine Operations & Facilities Management Department provides a range of services for the medical campus in a customer-focused, efficient, and sustainable manner.
Operations & Facilities Management maintains 61 university buildings and provides operational, planning, and construction services to over 8.3 million gross square feet of space. We will open three new facilities between 2023 and 2025 with over 1.5M BGSF. In addition, the School of Medicine continues expanding its reach on and off campus in teaching, clinical care, and research. Our team plays a vital and important role in delivering clinical care, research, and education.
Serves as an unarmed, back-up/assistant to Response Officer II or Lead Officer when responding to life safety and protection of property, and emergency and non-emergency incidents on campus. Includes rendering emergency medical assistance or general first aid. Enforces University policy/procedures and criminal law. May be assigned to vehicle or foot patrol as part of a unified team. Must be prepared to deal with a variety of complex and ever-changing situations. Needs to be able to utilize various tools and techniques to resolve the situations and accurately and thoroughly record information for the official University record.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Responds or reacts as a team member to emergency and non-emergency incidents (medical, law enforcement, injury/accident, etc.) on campus. Takes action or makes notes for follow-up of any safety and security issues. Provides Emergency Management support during larger-scale incidents. When not on assignment, patrols the University properties.
  • Receives/compiles information for incident reports and conducts initial and follow-up investigations, as assigned, under the direction of an RO II or Lead Officer.
  • Conducts building checks, which include checking access control devices and door locks and proactively looking for any possible safety or security hazard. Uses problem-solving skills to resolve issues found during building checks.
  • Provides necessary follow-up (transports to the medical facility, notifies proper authorities, and undertakes any other necessary coordination) for faculty, staff, students, and visitors after immediate resolution of an incident.
  • Assists Medical Center personnel and visitors with directions and provides escorts when requested. Partners with customers in assigned geographical areas and assists them in resolving multi-department issues.
  • May serve as an instructor for skills training and certifications.
  • Takes possession of found property, attempting to locate the owner, and securing property according to established procedure.
  • Enforces parking regulations and provides support to the Transportation Office as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Criminal Justice.
  • Two years of experience as a Security Officer in a professional security organization.
  • Applicable Law enforcement or Military training.
  • Licensed Missouri EMT-B.
  • Certification as Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Member.
  • Obtain and maintain certification for Taser, OC Spray, collapsible baton, and handcuffs.
  • Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and communication skills.
  • Advanced computer skills to complete department incident reports as required.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent high school certification and one year of experience as an Officer In an academic or other professional environment or a combination of equivalent education and relevant experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a St. Louis Metropolitan Security License within 30 days of hire.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Missouri Class E or Illinois Class D Driver's license within 30 days of hire.

Salary Range
$17.52 - $26.27 / Hourly
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
