JOB SUMMARY / PURPOSE

 

The Respiratory Therapist Reg Lead is a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) that possesses working knowledge of respiratory care and has displayed age-specific competence for all age groups serviced by the facility. The incumbent conducts himself/herself in a professional manner and is courteous to patients, physicians, visitors, members of the department and all other healthcare personnel. The incumbent supports and contributes to departmental productivity and organizational objectives by functioning as an integrated member of the respiratory care team and performs services consistent with his/her scope of licensure. The incumbent supports and exhibits behaviors consistent with the organization’s mission and values in offering hope and healing to all. The incumbent assures the effective use of unit resources to meet patient’s need, promote interdepartmental cooperation, problem solving, facilitate the cooperative efforts of the staff group and provide assessable leadership person to communicate with staff.

 

ESSENTIAL KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

 

1. Is able to perform all the duties of a Registered Respiratory Therapist (see Respiratory Therapist Reg job description)

2. Performs airway management to include both emergent and elective intubations.

3. Performs staff assignments in Cerner. Provides the assignment of all therapists assigned to the shift. Will assign each therapist a full workload appropriate to their shift length. The lead will take the ED assignment/beeper, as necessary and appropriate.

4. Provides adjustments of the work schedule for the shifts to assure an equitable workload, with input from staff, in accordance with department workload and budgetary constraints.

5. Is responsible for leading the daily operation and staffing of the Respiratory Care

6. Promotes overall positive team atmosphere.

7. Performs conflict resolution and service recovery.

8. Provides input for yearly criteria-based evaluations for all Respiratory Care employees.

9. May be called upon to assist in assessment and resolution of difficult patient care situations. Assist with spot-checking and troubleshooting of possibly malfunctioning equipment.

10. Ensures adequate supplies are in stock for the department’s use.

11. Performs charges, credits and charge reconciliations. Maintains proper documentation for charge reconciliation.

12. Performs daily safety huddle with employees. Addresses potential safety concerns and addresses unsafe behavior in others.

13. Committed to increasing patient and employee satisfaction, sets achievable expectations, assumes responsibility for problem solving, ensures commitments are met, solicits opinions and ideas and responds to patients, co-workers, physicians, and all other stakeholders.

14. Prepares clinical staff schedules, including charge therapist and areas of coverage assignments.

15. Performs other duties, within the scope of licensure, as assigned. Must be available and willing to perform other duties and/or responsibilities as directed and as necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the department and hospital.


Required Education for Staff Job Levels: At a minimum, the incumbent shall have received the equivalent of an Associate’s Degree in Cardiopulmonary Services or Respiratory Care from an accredited respiratory therapy educational program.

 

Required Licensure and Certifications: The incumbent shall be distinguished as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC); such distinction shall be kept current (if applicable). Additionally, the incumbent shall hold an active license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner from the Kentucky Board of Respiratory Care. The incumbent shall hold a current certificate from the American Heart Association (AHA) in Basic Life Support or Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers. It is desired that the incumbent hold a current certificate from the AHA in Advanced Cardiac Life Support. If the incumbent functions within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, he/she shall hold a current certificate from the AHA/American Academy of Pediatrics as a Neonatal Resuscitation Program Provider.

 

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The incumbent shall be skilled in interpersonal communication to the level that is required to effectively interact with patients, visitors and members of the healthcare team. The incumbent shall possess critical thinking skills adequate to evaluate patient conditions and recommend appropriate intervention (or to seek assistance when necessary). The incumbent shall display time management skills that are sufficient to organize scheduled tasks in a manner that ensures delivery of high quality respiratory care. Mechanical abilities are required for care and operation of respiratory care equipment. Able to use mobile phone. At a minimum, the incumbent shall communicate in English at the twelfth grade level. The incumbent shall possess basic rationale in communicating therapeutic needs with patients, visitors and members of the healthcare team. The incumbent shall possess working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and basic understanding of electronic health record systems.

 

PREFERRED Qualifications: Minimum of five years of experience in respiratory critical care is preferred.
