The Manteca Fire Department is looking for a reserve who is willing to learn and train along side our staff to assist front line firefighters.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Firefighter Reserve is the entry-level position of the Firefighter series. Employees may have only limited or no directly related fire suppression education or work experience. During the initial employment period, Reserve Firefighters will attend an intensive Firefighter Academy that teaches basic Firefighter knowledge and skills. Upon successful completion of the academy, Reserve Firefighter will function in the capacity of a Firefighter under the direction of a Fire Captain.

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Fire Captain, protect life and property through fire suppression, fire prevention and emergency medical aid in response to fire alarms, medical calls and other emergency situations; maintain firefighting equipment in proper working condition; participate in extensive training activities to enhance firefighting abilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Respond to fire alarms, medical calls and other emergency situations; participate in fire suppression and rescue activities; operate pumps, aerial ladders and other auxiliary fire apparatus;enter burning buildings to rescue inhabitants and access fires for suppression.

Participate in engine and pumper hook-up at scene of fire; lay connector hose; hold nozzle and direct water stream to combat fire; raise and climb ladders; use chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, ropes and other equipment to suppress and extinguish fires.

Perform salvage, overhaul and maintenance operations following fire suppression; test, adjust and perform minor repairs on apparatus, fire hydrants and other equipment to assure proper operation and readiness for future alarms; sweep water; remove debris; search for and extinguish hidden fires.

Serve as an Emergency Medical Technician in response to medical emergencies; administer emergency medical aid and CPR as needed; assess patient condition and initiate treatment; establish airways, administer oxygen and operate resuscitators as necessary; assist paramedics with advanced life support functions including defibrillation.

Operate a variety of specialized equipment including hand and power tools, chain saws, rescue tools, medical equipment and generators; drive Fire Department vehicles as needed in emergency situations.

Participate in training and continuing education in fire suppression, emergency medical aid, hazardous materials, use of equipment, special assignments and other matters; provide training to others as assigned; participate in physical fitness activities to assure physical readiness to participate in emergency operations.

Perform general maintenance duties on firefighting equipment, apparatus, buildings and grounds; check City fire hydrants to assure proper operation; maintain vehicles in proper working condition.

Perform fire prevention inspections of commercial and residential buildings; check for fire hazards; facilitate fire prevention through education, demonstration and enforcement of regulations.

Communicate with City personnel and outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns.

Prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports related to equipment, fuel usage, injuries, incidents, inspections and assigned activities.

Remain on-call while off duty for major emergency situations as directed.

OTHER DUTIES:

Provide tours of the facilities to the public; provide educational programs to teach safety and fire prevention.

Install and assist the public with smoke detection equipment in community homes as requested.

Participate on specialized teams such as hazardous materials as assigned.

Perform related duties as assigned.

ABILITY TO DEVELOP KNOWLEDGE IN:

Techniques, methods, materials and equipment used in fire prevention, fire suppression and emergency medical services.

Technical operation, use and maintenance of specialized fire apparatus and equipment.

Pump and hydraulic operations.

CPR and emergency medical practices and procedures.

Principles and practices of fire science.

Firefighting procedures such as hose and ladder practices, forcible entry, ventilation, vehicle extrication, salvage and overhaul procedures.

Proper tool and equipment usage and maintenance of firefighter equipment.

Record-keeping and report writing techniques.

Oral and written communication skills.

Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

Building codes and types of construction.

ABILITY TO:

Protect life and property through fire suppression, fire prevention and emergency medical aid in response to fire alarms, medical calls and other emergency situations.

Operate fire equipment and apparatus.

Participate in extensive training activities to enhance firefighting abilities.

Utilize appropriate fire suppression agents and techniques.

Perform fire prevention inspections of commercial and residential buildings.

Determine appropriate action within clearly defined guidelines.

Maintain Fire Department buildings, equipment and apparatus in proper working condition.

Set up and operate pumps, hoses and related hydraulic equipment at fire scenes.

Interpret, apply and explain codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Maintain records and prepare reports.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

Perform prolonged and strenuous work in adverse conditions.

Perform heavy physical labor and climb stairs and ladders.

Search for victims in hazardous environments.

Report to work every scheduled workday.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
18 years of age or older
Reside within 30 air miles of the City of Manteca
Valid California Class C driver's license.
Obtain a valid Emergency Medical Technician I Certification within 18 months of employment
Possession Firefighter 1 Certificate and/or FF1 Accredited Academy completion by time of appointment preferred.
