Summary:

We are currently searching for a Research Technician I to support the Quantitative Genomics shared resources lab. This opportunity is a full-time position, and it is onsite in Ashburn, VA. We are looking for a conscientious and hardworking entry-level scientist who is eager to learn and grow their skills in next-generation sequencing in support of research conducted on the Janelia Research Campus. This position offers the opportunity to develop new skills and learn best practices while gaining experience using the latest technologies.

About the role:

In this role, you will learn good laboratory practices and receive instruction for proper pipetting techniques and use of laboratory equipment. Following standard operating procedures, you will assist in the performance of laboratory research and procedures by performing a variety of routine experimental techniques such as DNA and RNA QC, sample preparation for sequencing, and next-generation sequencer operation. You will also collect, verify, record, and compile data and information in support of research.

About Quantitative Genomics:

The Quantitative Genomics lab is a shared resource lab that provides a wide variety of expert services, including tissue dissection, microscopy, cell isolation, single-cell assays, transcriptome and epigenetic profiling, and genome assembly using next-generation sequencing platforms from Illumina & PacBio, and many more applications are in development. Our goal is to serve as a gateway to the rapidly evolving technologies for high-content genomic analysis for both experts and novices. From experimental design to data analysis, we are ready to help Janelians at any phase of a project. More information about our lab can be found here.

What you’ll do:

  • Assist scientists and technicians by performing various research procedures and operating a variety of instruments and other scientific equipment.

  • Collect, record, organize and verify the accuracy of data; perform calculations and prepare charts, graphs and reports. May use software applications to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and test reports.

  • Configure and operate laboratory apparatus and instruments; read and record instrument data; tabulate data; keep laboratory records.

  • May order chemicals, reagents, and other laboratory supplies.

  • Participate in laboratory meetings and planning sessions.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor of Science in Biology, or related discipline.

  • Experience related to molecular biology techniques and/or next-generation sequencing preferred.

  • Strong initiative, self-motivation, and capacity for creative problem solving.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills, customer service skills, and time management skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and recordkeeping skills.

Physical Requirements

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances or other hazardous materials.
