Job SummaryThe Division of Hematology and Oncology is seeking a Research Technician II in the Kidney Cancer Program / Dr. Brugarolas Lab. The Kidney Cancer Program (KCP) is one of two programs in the U.S. designated by the National Cancer Institute as a Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE). Our laboratory focuses on elucidating mechanisms leading to kidney cancer and the development of new treatments. We are looking for an ambitious, highly driven, well organized, detail oriented individual to join our team and be involved in our tumorgraft program. The tumorgraft program is a state-of-the-art platform to study kidney cancer involving the transplantation into mice of tumor samples from patients collected during surgery from the operating room. Our tumorgraft program is the largest in the world and a national resource. The individual offered this opportunity would work within a team made up of physicians and scientists and would also assist with clinical trials. The post is ideal for a college graduate seeking to learn about biomedical research and build up curriculum before applying to medical or graduate school.
Department Expectations- Screens surgeon schedules for candidate patients and coordinates acquisition of tumor samples from the operating room.
- Maintains a database of cases and tumors.
- Learns to transplant tumors in mice and maintains tumors by passaging them in mice.
- Performs drug trials and analyzes tumor response using palpation and MRI.
- Coordinates tumor tissue analyses.
- Assists with clinical trials and patient enrollment.
- Assists with collaborations with other investigators and institutions worldwide.
- Participates in lab meetings and journal review sessions.
- Assists with supervising summer students.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor\'s degree with major coursework in field of assignment and no experience required.
- Two (2) years college with emphasis in coursework in field of assignment and two (2) years of laboratory experience at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent.
- High school graduation or GED and four (4) years laboratory experience to include two (2) years at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent.
- Performs routine scientific and medical research work in science area such as biology, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific field.
- Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus.
- Records research data in accordance with prescribed procedures, discussing results with supervisor.
- Assists in collection of data for project reports.
- Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning implementation of new procedures.
- May plan for, and provide working supervision to, work of laboratory personnel of lower grade engaged in limited phase of research project.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
