The Everman Lab (https://evermane.wixsite.com/elizabetheverman) is hiring a motivated full-time Research Technician to assist with several collaborative projects that examine the physiological and behavioral response to heavy metal toxicity. We use the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as our model system and employ a range of techniques to examine trait variation and genetic control of heavy metal stress resistance. This position will provide opportunities to learn molecular and genomic techniques as well as behavioral assays that assess feeding rates, oviposition behavior, and learning and memory. The position will also provide training in the R coding language and data analysis and may occasionally involve field work.

The main responsibilities of the successful candidate will be maintaining Drosophila cultures, assisting with a large screen of feeding choice behavior, and optimizing learning and memory assays. Other responsibilities will include performing routine laboratory techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, library preparation, PCR work, as well as maintaining excellent records of lab work, curating samples, and assisting in data analysis.

Core Duties:

  • Collaboratively plan scientifically sound experiments in support of research projects in lab or field.
  • Independently conduct experiments and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • Use statistical methods to analyze and interpret experiment results; offer suggestions regarding modifications to procedures and protocols in collaborations with Dr. Everman and other members of the Everman lab.
  • Review literature on an ongoing basis to remain current with new procedures and apply learnings to research.
  • Contribute to publication of findings as needed. Participate in the preparation of written documents including procedures, presentations, and proposals.
  • Help with general lab maintenance as needed including lab stocks, chemical inventory and safety records, general lab support.
  • Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures, techniques, and safety.
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Job Location

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree in a Biological Science, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Sociology, or other health related field. 

Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months equivalent experience in lieu of the Bachelor's Degree.

Skills:

  • General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance using knowledge and skills when needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of scientific principles to problem solving work.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.

Advertised Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Frequently sit to perform microscope work for multiple hours at a time and use hand or foot controls
  • Occasionally kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts
  • Occasionally climb, scrub, sweep, mop, to maintain lab space and equipment
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job
  • Ability to bend, stand, sit, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment
  • Position may require repetitive motion
  • Position will at times require the employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials are present
  • Employee must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, and possibly a respirator
  • May require extended or unusual work hours based on research requirements and business needs

Departmental Preferences:

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in Biology or a related field
  • Full-time wet lab experience (through internships or previous employment)
  • Experience with molecular biology techniques: DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, sequencing library preparation
  • Experience working with and maintaining Drosophila cultures
  • Experience working with microscopes such as stereo or compound light microscopes
  • Competitive candidates will have strong lab, scientific reasoning, and organizational skills
  • Previous experience working in a research lab
  • The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, computer skills, and attention to detail
