Job Summary:

MAPMG is seeking a Research Surgical Clinical Reviewer (SCR) to collect reliable surgical outcomes data for surgeries performed within Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States (KPMAS) and submit data internally and to the American College of Surgeon National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) database. The SCR will accomplish this through high quality data compilation, documentation and data entry of all eligible surgeries performed on the KPMAS members. They will also be responsible for meeting data acquisition and transmission protocol requirements of the NSQIP program while maintaining the structure and processes to assure efficiency and accuracy throughout the abstraction process. The SCR will work closely with the Regional Surgical Quality Lead, Executive Leadership Team, Perioperative Leadership and Service Chiefs to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects as may be identified.

This position will be based in Rockville, Maryland and offers a hybrid work arrangement with the ability to go into the office on an as-needed basis. Candidates must be willing to relocate to the Washington D.C., Maryland, or Virginia area.

Responsibilities:

  • Identifies surgical patients for inclusion in data collection; collects preoperative, operative and postoperative data components for the NSQIP program through the effective utilization of KP HealthConnect (KPHC) and relevant electronic medical record systems
  • Coordinates data management throughout the required peri-operative period (pre-operative through 30-days postoperative)
  • Works with Regional Surgical Quality Lead to analyze NSQIP semiannual reports and interval reports to identify and report opportunities to improve patient care
  • Performs and oversees ongoing Quality Improvement activities across the region
  • Works with the SCR team, Quality Analysts, Regional Surgical Quality Lead, Perioperative Leadership, Service Chiefs and support staff to improve surgical care within KPMAS
  • Designs, conducts and evaluates studies and problem-focused review requested by Medical Group administration which may involve sensitive, confidential or medico-legal issues
  • Assists in the preparation of regular Surgical Quality reports that are sent to the Executive Leadership Team and Perioperative Leadership
  • Participates in NSQIP Program teleconferences, and attends ACS Quality and Safety Conference
  • Maintains competency in the role of Surgical Clinical Reviewer (SCR) by participating in ACS NSQIP ongoing education, training, monthly updates, and timely completion of periodic examinations
  • Meets data acquisition and transmission protocol requirements of the ACS programs while maintaining the structure and processes to assure efficiency and accuracy throughout the abstraction process
  • Communicates with Regional Surgical Quality Lead and Research Project Manager to implement and evaluate strategies to reach quality goals of NSQIP
  • Identifies opportunities to feedback NSQIP data to relevant groups or meetings

Qualifications:

  • Current state license registration as Registered Nurse (RN) in DC or MD or VA required, must be able to obtain license in all three jurisdictions upon employment
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
  • Ability to complete all training modules and pass the NSQIP SCR certification examination is required
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in one of the following settings: hospital surgery department, surgery clinic, clinical research or medical records
  • Familiarity with medical procedures and terminology
  • Clinical chart review and abstraction experience required
  • The candidate should have some experience gathering information in a complex health system environment
  • Ability to track down information through various sources such as medical records, surgery clinics, and direct patient contact
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in quality-related activities
  • Ability to build relationships and gain alignment for clinical support
  • Ability to interact with all members of the surgical team and administrative staff in a professional and courteous manner
  • Ability to share information across functions
  • Strong planning, organizing, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office, not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to learn and utilize new software and web applications for data entry and report generation
  • Basic statistical knowledge preferred
  • Quality improvement/patient safety methodology (PDSA, Lean, DMAIC) experience preferred
