Job Summary:

Perform and assist with laboratory techniques related to cell culture cell propagation cell freezing maintenance and research in infectious diseases such Influenza virus and bacterial pneumonia. Specific techniques and important base skills include western blots, ELISA, real time RT-PCR, immunohistochmeistry, nucleic acid and protein purification, enzymatic assays for cytosolic enzyme activity, and cryosectioning. Areas of focus will be immunology, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, and pathology. As experiments require, assist the supervisor in applications of infectious agents and collection and processing of both pre- and post-mortem samples from mice (e.g. blood samples necropsy preparation of tissues maintaining organized stored samples).
While experience in most areas is highly desirable, some in laboratory training will be provided. Ultimate responsibilities include the areas of: Supply and reagent inventory and ordering, tissue and cell culture, mouse colony management, animal dissection (e.g. mostly mouse biological sample collection), tissue preparation for histological analyses, database management, laboratory assays, and protein and DNA purification and analyses. Some of these duties will involve supervision and training of students in basic molecular biology techniques. Also, some time may be required to assist others in the laboratory with biosafety, radiation safety, and chemical safety regulation record keeping and compliance. Furthermore, this individual will work with others to get quotes for equipment, equipment repairs, and upgrades. A team-work mentality is highly valued but the successful candidate must also be independent when needed.
The successful applicant should have familiarity with computers (PC or Macintosh) enough to run basic Microsoft Office softwares Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, and the ability or capability to use Photoshop, Illustrator, database software, reference manager software, and statistic analyses software. These will be useful in assisting the supervisor in analysis of data sets assembling analyzed data into supplementary presentation material (e.g. photo-microscopy) to support presentations publications and grant applications and annual reports. Ability to run basic data mining software makes candidate highly desirable.
Experience with primary cell and immortalized cell tissue culture, biochemistry, molecular biology techniques, and mouse husbandry is preferred.
Human and animal viruses will be examined and exposure could lead to disease. Low levels of radioactive agents are occasionally used. However, if good lab practice procedures are used there are no real dangers.

Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Highly motivated individuals with interest in biomedical research are encouraged to apply for a position in a research laboratory. A graduate or professional degree in applicable area is required. The applicant will have a MS/PhD/DVM degree in one of the biological or biochemical sciences or equivalent experience and have superb organizational skills.
