Job description


We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our research team as a Research Specialist II. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in providing essential support to ongoing research projects, particularly focusing on animal work involving intravitreal injections, subcutaneous injections, retina and optic nerve dissections, immunofluorescence, imaging, and image analysis.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct micro-dissection of ocular tissue- from tissue harvesting to retina and optic nerve dissections with precision and attention to detail.
  • Perform intravitreal injections, cyclosporine injections, and other animal work as required for research projects for both mice and rats.
  • Complete all steps required for fluorescently labeling and imaging ocular tissue: immunohistochemistry, operating imaging equipment, data collection, and conducting image analysis using appropriate software tools.
  • Comfortably perform the following techniques: Western blotting, PCR, ELISA, Flow cytometry, plasmid preparation and purification.
  • Assist managing multiple mouse lines, performing ear punches, breeding and genotype.
  • Experienced in handling primary cell tissue culture, meeting high sterility technique.
  • inventory, proliferation, and classifying cells.
  • Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot and optimize experimental protocols.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed experimental records.
  • Ensure compliance with ethical and safety standards in all research activities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Two years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
  • Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with additional techniques relevant to the research focus.
  • Knowledge of safety and ethical guidelines related to animal research.

Starting Salary Range: Min $40,900 - Max $71,600 Annually ($63,925 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
