Job description

What We Do
At the SEI AI Division, we conduct research in applied artificial intelligence and the engineering challenges related to the practical design and implementation of AI technologies and systems. We currently lead a community-wide movement to mature the discipline of AI Engineering for Defense and National Security.
As our government customers adopt AI and machine learning to provide leap-ahead mission capabilities, we
  • Build real-world, mission-scale AI capabilities through solving practical engineering problems

  • Discover and define the processes, practices, and tools to support operationalizing AI for human-centered, robust, secure, and scalable mission capabilities
  • Prepare our customers to be ready for the unique challenges of adopting, deploying, using, and maintaining AI capabilities
  • Identify and investigate emerging AI and AI-adjacent technologies that are rapidly transforming the technology landscape

Are you creative, curious, and collaborative? Do you enjoy doing meaningful and complex work? Are you interested in making a difference by bringing innovation to government organizations and beyond? Apply to join our team.
Position Summary: As a Research Scientist focusing on Advanced Computing, you will assist with research, analysis, and summarization on projects critical to U.S. government needs.
Requirements
  • Research practices and publications. You have conducted research and applied scientific methods. You have a reputation for the highest level of integrity. You have demonstrated contributions and have published research.
  • Familiarity with emerging trends and opportunities. You are familiar with technical challenges and emerging trends in computing and information science, and you are aware of opportunities in industry and government.
  • Deep technical knowledge. You have performed work or research in high performance computing, distributed and scalable computing, alternative computing architectures, or related fields. You have worked with tools, software, and programming languages associated with your field.
  • Technical leadership. You have led or participated in research projects and have experience collaborating across research teams.

  • Proposals. You have contributed to successful research proposals to funding agencies and led or participated in the resulting projects.
  • Knowledge of Department of Defense and Intelligence Community. You have a basic understanding of DoD or Intelligence Community software systems acquisition practices.

Duties
  • Hands-on research. You will participate in novel research in Advanced Computing, advanced analytics, and applied machine learning.
  • Solution development. You'll work with interdisciplinary teams to turn research results into prototype operational capabilities for government customers and stakeholders.

  • Build and demonstrate. You'll participate in the design and develop of solutions that provide needed capabilities to the government, building on state-of-the-art research in high-performance computing and edge architectures, data analytics, information architectures, machine learning, artificial intelligence, software architectures, and human-machine interaction.
  • Test and evaluate. You'll conduct rapid prototyping to demonstrate and evaluate technologies in relevant environments. You'll evaluate systems for performance and security. You'll test software capabilities using novel testing and analysis techniques.
  • Collaborate. You'll actively participate on teams of developers, researchers, designers, and technical leads. You'll collaborate with researchers and our government customers to understand challenges, needs, and possible solutions. You'll contribute to improving the overall technical capabilities of the lab by mentoring and teaching others, participating in design (software and otherwise) sessions, and sharing insights and wisdom across the SEI.
  • Program. You'll have the chance to work with modern software languages such as Python and C/C++, and hardware design languages including Verilog, VHDL, or other HLS languages.
  • Technical Experimentation. You'll experiment with emerging technologies such as augmented and virtual reality, computer vision, and deep learning, and explore the latest in advanced hardware, including FPGAs, CGRAs, TPUs, and emergent technologies such as neuromorphic and analog processors.

  • Strategize. You will work with lab leaders and colleagues to plan, develop, and carry out an overall research strategy, and to influence the national research agenda regarding future technology.
