Job description

Bachelors degree in Biology, Public Health, Epidemiology, Infection Control, Statistics/Biostatistics, Biomedical Science, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or a related degree, AND at least two years of relevant post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field; OR a Master’s degree in one of the above fields, AND at least one year of post-degree professional research experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in data analysis of injury, hospitalization, health systems and/or surveillance data; Experience with data collection, management, analysis, and reporting, including intermediate to advance knowledge of SAS, SAS SQL, R or Python; intermediate to advance knowledge mapping software including but not limited to ARC GIS or R mapping capabilities. Strong analytic skills including interpretation of results and data analytic outputs to convey information to a variety of internal and external audiences; Experience working with and/or designing complex relational databases; experience developing and maintaining databases (Access, RedCap, or others); Experience in designing program evaluation and program performance monitoring plans; Experience developing data reports for public and internal use, data visualizations, and research deliverables including the preparation of peer-reviewed manuscripts and scientific posters; Demonstrated ability to work independently, coordinate and build partnerships with multiple Department of Health entities, and supervision of professional staff.

Duties Description

The Research Scientist 1 will join the Office of Gun Violence Prevention (OGVP) as a mid-level member of the Research and Evaluation Unit. The incumbent will contribute to the identification of evidence-based strategies, measurement of short-term outputs, and assessment of long-term outcomes of gun violence prevention work across New York. The Research Scientist 1 will work both independently and under the direction of a senior scientist to contribute directly towards problem definition, study design, execution, analyses, and interpretation and presentation of results. Responsibilities will include: Conduct comprehensive literature reviews and synthesize research findings to identify evidence-based strategies for reducing the prevalence of gun violence; Under the direction of a Research Scientist 3 or 4, design and implement research studies and data collection methodologies, including surveys, interviews, and focus groups, to gather relevant data and insights; Prepare research and analytical reports, professional papers and publications, policy briefs related to OGVP’s research and analysis efforts, and presentations summarizing research findings for internal and external stakeholders; Provide support to Research Scientist 3 or 4 in preparing grant reports, study designs, and exposure assessment frameworks. Provide support to investigators to coordinate and achieve project objectives and develop and implement epidemiological studies; Assist in developing evidence-based strategies and interventions to prevent gun violence; Contribute to the development and dissemination of findings. This can be in the form of fact sheets, white papers, tables, graphs, progress reports, articles for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and presentations to relevant audiences; Maintain situational awareness of current research related to gun violence prevention; Provide evaluation support to all OGVP special projects including development and monitoring of measurable goals and objectives, design and implementation of community assessments, developing templates and tools for non-research staff to adequately track key performance indicators, collection and analysis of data, and preparation of written reports. Under the direction of a Research Scientist 3 or 4, develop evaluation plans to assess the impact of various projects overseen by OGVP; Monitor and evaluate the impact of gun violence prevention programs and initiatives on communities. Independently identify communities and areas of interest in this work, and present evaluation findings to higher-level research and OGVP management staff; Develop, track, and monitor the performance of OGVP’s portfolio of work; Utilize participatory evaluation approaches that provide program participants with tools for assessing the planning, implementation, and self-evaluation of their programs; Analyze and interpret quantitative and qualitative data to generate meaningful insights and policy recommendations. Independently determine methods for analysis and interpretation of data; Under the direction of a Research Scientist 3 or 4, develop and administer surveys, interviews, and other data collection methods; Conduct regular project evaluations and provide recommendations for process improvements; Support OGVP staff with assessing trends to understand the landscape of gun violence in New York; Under the direction of a Research Scientist 3 or 4, plan and manage all aspects of program evaluations, including methods design, data collection, data analysis, and reporting, developing qualitative and quantitative methods and instruments.

Additional Comments
Permanent, non-competitive, full-time appointment. Occasional travel, including overnights, throughout New York State including to areas not served by public transportation may be required (20%).
