Position Summary
The Janowski Laboratory discovers new viruses and aims to understand how these cause disease in humans. The current focus is on astroviruses and their newly discovered capacity to cause fatal neurological diseases in humans and other mammals. In addition, we are using astroviruses as a model system to study critical components of the viral lifecycle. We are dissecting the critical function of the stem-loop II motif, an RNA element present in astroviruses and coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2.
This position will focus on work using cutting-edge techniques to study viral infection, including a reverse genetics system for astroviruses, gene knockout cell lines, mouse infections, and brain organoids (mini-brains). These projects will utilize diverse molecular biology techniques like PCR, immunofluorescence, cellular staining, flow cytometry, CRISPR, and RNA-seq.
