The School of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Laboratory Operations Specialist to join their team.
The School of Medicine's (SoM) Research Laboratory Operations Specialist provides professional level administration and management of the approximately 2.5M square feet of research space in SoM in three major sites: on-campus in the Health Sciences complex, at the UW Medicine South Lake Union research site, and at Harborview Medical Center. Additional large-scale research programs are housed on upper UW campus in Molecular & Nano Engineering and the Foege Building.
The Research Laboratory Operations Specialist utilizes specialized knowledge of biomedical research to provide proper oversight, planning and implementation of laboratory cleanouts and periodic relocation activities as required by the School of Medicine. This position is responsible for the disposition & surplusing of equipment and supplies, occasional oversight of moving laboratories from one location to another, consultation on BSC replacements, fume hood removals and other lab safety equipment, execute and report laboratory space assessments as requested, provide direction to researchers regarding EHS mandated safety equipment upgrades, and other relevant duties as needed. This position reports to the SOM Facilities Manager for Space Planning & Management.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Laboratory Cleanout Management
  • Works under the direction of the SoM Facilities Manager to ensure that identified lab spaces are vacated in a timely manner according to the space policy enforced by the Vice Chair for Research & Graduate Education.
  • Maintain clear and open communication with department administrators and lab managers to define scope of lab cleanouts, track progress, and manage cost and schedule.
  • Meets with Department Administrators & Researchers to review and assess lab spaces to be vacated and develops an agreed upon workplan & timeline to manage the disposition of all equipment, supplies, general contents within the lab spaces.
  • Maintains ongoing communications with Department representatives and SOM Facilities manager regarding work progress and any questions or issues that need to be resolved.
  • Exercises substantial responsibility to ensure the safe disposition of all laboratory equipment, supplies, and biohazardous materials according to the policies and regulations set forth by the University, EHS, and the School of Medicine.
  • Coordinates proper disposal and/or surplusing of all research supplies, equipment, and general lab contents including cataloguing items as needed for UW Surplus pickup.
  • Order chemical disposal pickup with EHS and clear the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) from the EH&S MyChem databases.
  • Ensures all laboratory surfaces and equipment are cleaned and sterilized according to university requirements.
  • Order UW custodial cleaning of floor as the final cleanup step.
  • Coordinates with Department and SoM Facilities manager the final cleanout inspections of the laboratory spaces.
    Oversight of Laboratory Relocations
  • Provides occasional oversight and coordination for the relocation of laboratory equipment, supplies, furniture, etc. from one location to another in coordination with laboratory PI's and Lab Managers as requested.
  • Provide consultation to lab managers to ensure all equipment and hazardous materials are safely packaged, moved, and relocated properly.
  • Assist in the coordination of moving supplies and move work orders for agreed upon relocation date.
  • Works closely with SOM Facilities team to ensure successful relocation process.
    Lab Utilization Assessments, Reporting and Other Duties
  • Performs space assessments as directed by the Som Facilities director or manager; produces ad hoc reporting on the status and use of RESEARCH LABORATORY spaces.
  • Based on space assessment information gathering, updates space manager database records regarding lab PI occupancy reporting as needed.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in biochemistry, microbiology or related field.
  • Three or more years of job-related experience.
    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Knowledge and experience working in a RESEARCH LABORATORY setting.
  • Ability to be self-directed and complete assignments with minimum supervision.
  • Understanding of biochemistry and/or microbiology equipment and supplies used in labs and ability to find needed information on specific laboratory equipment.
  • Experience working with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
  • Experience and knowledge of laboratory safety procedures.
    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
