Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The goal of the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HPDP) is to prevent chronic disease and reduce health disparities. Investigators and staff at HPDP work with communities to conduct research, provide training and translate research findings into policy and practice. Research areas include nutrition and physical activity, cardiovascular health, diabetes, obesity, healthy food access, cancer prevention and control, children’s health, rural health, and health equity. HPDP is part of a network of 26 CDC Prevention Research Centers across the United States.

Position Summary:

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The UNC Children’s Healthy Weight Research Group (CHWRG) is offering a Research Internship for undergraduate students. CHWRG conducts innovative research designed to support caregivers and those in their care through equitable, innovative strategies that promote health and wellness. The purpose of the internship is to provide hands-on research experience for an undergraduate student who may be interested in a career in public health.
Research Interns with the CHWRG can expect the following:
* High-quality, short-term work experience
o 8- to 12-week summer internship appointment
o 20-30-hour work week
o Hybrid work model including remote, and in-person work at the CHWRG offices
o Bi-weekly paychecks during appointment
* Professional development opportunities
o Participation in professional development workshops
o One-on-one mentoring from senior staff at various stages of the research process
o Potential to network with researchers outside the CHWRG and area of expertise
o Invitation to attend seminars from researchers and/or public health organizations
* Experience conducting public health research
o Engagement with researchers working across multiple projects
o Opportunity to conduct an independent small research project with assistance from the research team to be presented to the group in a short briefing at the end of the summer
Current CHWRG research projects the Research Intern may have the opportunity to engage with include:
* Senior Living Physical Activity Support:
o Goal: Develop evidence-based practices for implementing physical activity in senior living settings.
* Social-Emotional Learning in Child Care:
o Goal: Identify strategies for positive social-emotional learning in child care settings.
* Motor Skill Development in Child Care:
o Goal: Identify strategies for positive motor skill development in child care settings.
* Weight-Related Health Promotion for Child Care Staff:
o Goal: Assist in developing weight management content for child care professionals.
* Go NAPSACC – National Dissemination Model:
o Goal: Evaluate a national effort to improve environmental quality in child care settings.
* Health Promotion for Families with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD):
o Goal: Conduct formative research with families of young children (0-6 years old) with IDD.
* Identifying Disparities in Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) Participation
o Goal: Examine and understand variations in CACFP participation among center-based Early Childhood Education programs, analyzing demographics, location, community factors, and state-level policies, while also uncovering contextual determinants to comprehend root causes of access inequities.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

This internship is designed for full-time undergraduate students. Undergraduate students who will graduate prior to the summer of employment are not eligible.
- Students must reside in the U.S. throughout their internship. International students who are planning to live in the U.S. during the summer of 2024 are eligible to apply. Any applicant who does not plan to live in the United States during the summer is not eligible for hire in the 2024 cycle.
- Students must be able to complete some of their work in-person at the Children’s Healthy Weight Research Group (CHWRG) offices at 1700 MLK Jr. Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.

- Students meeting the National Institutes of Health’s definition of Socio-Economic Disadvantaged backgrounds, are strongly encouraged to apply.
