JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, has an immediate opening for an Electrical or ComputerResearch Engineer. The department operates the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) radars on Kodiak Island, Alaska; King Salmon, Alaska; McMurdo Station, Antarctica; and South Pole Station, Antarctica. The radars are part of the international SuperDARN collaboration, which provides observations of the upper atmosphere for space weather research.
We seek an energetic individual to develop and maintain hardware and software for the operation of the radar systems, to take part in their day-to-day operation, and to assist in data quality assurance. Applicants must have a strong background in multi-threaded instrumentation programming for data collection. The radars use a combination of Python, C++, and Cuda for real-time data collection and analysis. The successful candidate will lead the development of new operating codes, optimize existing codes, and interact with the members of the international group that operates the SuperDARN network to ensure that the data are compatible with that produced by the rest of the network. Additional duties will include working with other members of the PSU SuperDARN group to monitor the radar operations and data transfers and to assist with scheduling and development of operating modes. The position will require travel to the radar sites, including those in Antarctica, which means that the successful candidate must be able to pass a physical examination to qualify for Antarctic travel.
Education and Experience:
The position requires a Bachelor's Degree or higher in electrical/computer engineering and at least two years of work experience. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of the concepts and practices of real-time programming on Linux systems and the use of modern coding and collaborative development tools. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success collaborating and developing software for small-scale to large-scale programs.
To Apply:
Applications must be submitted electronically and include a cover letter, CV, and the names, addresses, and contact information of three references. Review of applications will begin immediately.
Additional Information:
This is a limited-term appointment funded for one year from the date of hire, with the possibility of extending the appointment for a second year based on mutual satisfaction and continued funding.
