At Air Products, our purpose is to bring people together to reimagine what's possible, collaborate and innovate solutions to the world's most significant energy and environmental sustainability challenges. Grow with us as we embark on building tomorrow together by being the safest, most diverse and most profitable industrial gas company in the world.
Reimagine What's Possible
Materials Engineering Technology (MET) is looking for an experienced materials engineer to work with a collaborative, energetic team supporting Air Products' materials needs in all businesses globally. This is a hybrid role based at Global HQ in Allentown, PA, and in-person lab work will be required.
This role will directly support Air Products' carbon capture and green hydrogen plants, among others, through a combination of materials selection, failure analysis, and material performance research. This senior technical role will support and mentor younger engineers in the US, Saudi Arabia, and China. As part of the Chief Engineer's Office, MET performs risk assessment for the company and interacts with high level directors and managers to assess, communicate, and document risk, in addition to materials selection, failure analysis, and lifetime prediction work.
Job Duties
  • Failure analysis-lab work and communication of results to stakeholders
  • Plant support by answering questions about materials compatibility, repair or replace decisions, and inspections.
  • Materials selection for new plants and retrofits
  • Identifying gaps in materials performance and addressing through internal or external research
  • Working with external organizations such as AMPP (NACE), API, MTI, CGA, and ASTM to provide input on industry standards and keep up with industry developments and trends.
  • Mentoring junior engineers in the US, Saudi Arabia, and China
  • 10% travel, including plant visits, conference travel, and/or supplier visits.

Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in metallurgy, materials engineering, or related field
  • 20 - 25 years of experience doing failure analysis and materials selection in the chemical process industries and/or energy industry, outside of school.
  • Experience identifying and executing materials performance research projects.
Desired but not required:
  • Experience with oxygen compatibility of materials
  • Experience with nonmetallic materials selection and failure analysis
  • Experience with microstructural analysis of welds and welding
  • Experience with gasification, ammonia production, CO2 capture and sequestration, and/or hydrogen production.
  • Experience with cryogenic materials performance and testing
  • Experience with machinery
