The Geographical Sciences Center of Excellence (GSCE) at South Dakota State University (SDSU) seeks applications for a Research Associate I to begin on June 22, 2024. This is a 12-month, full-time, and benefit-eligible position. This position is dependent on funding and performance. The GSCE, housed in the Department of Geography & Geospatial Sciences, has a mission to apply geospatial techniques, especially remote sensing, to advance the scientific understanding of the Earth System and the consequences of a changing global landscape. This position is supervised by the Department Head for Geography and Geospatial Sciences. This posting will be used to fill three Research Associate I positions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will be expected to conduct the following activities:
Develop algorithms to process time series data observed from polar-orbiting and geostationary satellites.
- Develop compute codes for the implementation of operational phenology detections, the monitoring of crop growth, or the generation of biomass burning emissions products.
- Investigate the impacts of environmental changes on long-term variation in vegetation phenology.
- Communicate with users to modify/improve various data formats of land surface products including vegetation phenology and biomass burning emissions.
- Prepare research articles for journal publications and conference presentations.
- Prepare research proposals for securing external funding.
MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS:
- Masters in Geography or Geospatial Sciences or closely related field;
- At least one year of experience in remote sensing;
- Ability to develop algorithms for quantitatively analyzing time series data from both polar-orbiting and geostationary satellites.
- Ability to handle (read/write) satellite data formats of HDF and NetCDF.
- Ability to write computer codes using C/C++ or IDL in Linux/Unix.
- Ability to develop an operational computer system.
- Ability to publish the results of original research in peer-reviewed journals.
- Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD in Geography or Geospatial Sciences or closely related field;
- Ability to develop an independent, externally funded research program; and
- Ablility to work in an interdisciplinary team.
